Just seen on Twitter Athersley Rec had a friendly earlier with a Barnsley Town FC… They have a Twitter account but nothing has been posted on it yet, not seen owt about these before. Does anyone know much about them? Didn’t Shaw Lane want to change their name to something similar before they packed in but Barnsley FC put a stop to it?
Can’t find owt about em anywhere so they must’ve recently been formed. Even says 2023 on their club badge.
I hope BFC leave them alone, can’t see why they’d need to be worried by what’s effectively a Sunday League side.
I see Rapid Response are a sponsor too. Can’t imagine that would have happened if we thought there was a conflict of interest. Wasn’t it Cryne who got it stopped, rather than the new mob? I could be wrong there though. Personally don’t see any problem with it. Let em get on with it.
Chronicle report including this extract at the time they folded. The recent application to become AFC Barnsley was rejected by the Football Association on the grounds that it would cause confusion with Barnsley FC – following opposition from Oakwell, the council and the Sheffield FA. Under Patrick's stewardship at the time. If I remember rightly.
Place isn't big enough to develop more than a decent Sunday league side. It will be same for the women in a couple of year, Barnsley Ladies will change to Sheffield whatever now they're playing there.
Wasn’t the ShawLane team that wanted to change their name and BFC objected? The guy who owned Aquaforce was the money man behind them. Also a Wednesday fan which didn’t help
I can see BFC sending them a pretty harsh sounding legal letter very soon. I’m sure to stop shaw lane changing their name, Cryne trademarked a bunch of names like Barnsley town, Barnsley Rovers etc. could be wrong, but summat rings a bell.
Olympic Legacy Park, l think it's on the site of the old Don Valley stadium https://www.barnsleywomensfc.org/news/club-announcement-2785871.html
