It looked like we'd finally made a few massive steps forward in the Val season, but sadly as usual, we fell apart drastically after the Play off loss.
But it made me think and hope that we could do that for a few more years still, and at least be near mid table in the Championship with a good coach/manager behind us. Surely this club can do that, instead of relegation struggles there all the time. :(

Agree with this, there needs to be a blend.
Hope I’m proved wrong but I am concerned for the season ahead given the business we have done and the disaster that was the Duff departure.

this isn’t a criticism, I think the pool we are fishing in is a reflection of where the club is financially - I’m actually really grateful to those running it, it’s one hell of a hard task.

Thing is, we don't need many players to slot straight in. We still have 8 members of the team that more or less picked itself last season: Williams, Kitching, Cadden, Connell, Kane, Phillips, Cole and Norwood. The keeper we've brought in on loan is not lower league and I believe the player to replace Mads is not at the club yet. I expect us to sign a centre half with some experience. With a fully fit squad that just leaves one position to fill, that of Bobby Thomas. And we've got a choice of McCarthy, Cundy or Lopata, plus a couple of younger players who have been part of the first team squad during pre-season. IMHO we're starting the season in a much stronger position than we did last season as quite a few of the remaining 8 are way above the level they were at this time last season. Duff, and the season that took us to Wembley, improved them immeasurably.

The Remaining 8 - a sequel to The Hateful 8 but with a lot less boring chatter.

Theres also the other side of the coin. How many have we signed that have flopped?
At the minute we are heavily reliant on them not flopping which as a percentage i bet alot more have flopped than been a success.

I like signing players for nothing from lower leagues. Its a great idea but you need a balance. Cant put all your eggs in one basket and rely on young lads from 2/3/4 leagues below to hit the ground running. Not fair on them.

I get the OP’s point but I don’t think we’ve ever signed as many non league players in one window.

When was the last year we spent consecutive seasons in League One? Not that it’s a level playing field because there’s so much financial doping even at league one level that we can never compete with Derby/Reading etc.

It's a good point, and one I broadly agree with. I also hate the negativity prior to a kid kicking a ball ... But ... and I don't wish to come across all Nelly negative here, but we need experienced league players too.
Many players on that list took two seasons to get going too.

Anyway, hope all works out ok. YOUREDS

If we'd signed a load of standout players from L2, nobody would have batted an eyelid. And I'll repeat what I've said in previous posts - the current difference in standard between L2 and the National League is negligible.

Yep. So in the words of Keith, I'm hoping these lads are a bit of layering...

If we end up with 4/5 in the XI because of sales or whatever then I'll be worried.

Ian Wright & Stuart Pearce arguably better than all them and other examples.

If someone had the time, it would be interesting to see a comparison between players signed from lower leagues against ‘bigger’ clubs/players.

I suspect it would clearly show our success rate at bigger signings is very few.

Me too, but I reckon the only way we'll see that is if they're in the first team on merit.

More to the point… how many signings have we ever made from higher up the pyramid, and how well did they do?
