Based on the 15/16 season, these are the players we signed and where we signed them from:
Otis Kahn - Free Transfer - Sheff Utd - League One
Simeon Jackson - Free Transfer - Coventry - League One
Aidy White - Free Transfer - Rotherham - Championship
Callum Evans - Free Transfer - Man Utd U21s - Premier League 2
Marley Watkins - Free Transfer - Inverness Caledonian Thistle - Scottish Premiership
Marc Roberts - Free Transfer - FC Halifax Town - National League
Reece Wabara - Free Transfer - Doncaster Rovers - League One
Alfie Mawson - Free Transfer - Brentford - Championship
Ben Drennan - Free Transfer - Newcastle Utd U18s - Youth
Bradley Ash - Undisclosed - Weston Super Mare - National League South
Shaun Tuton - Undisclosed - FC Halifax Town - National League
Josh Kay - Undisclosed - Fylde - National League North
    Jak McCourt - Undisclosed - Leicester U21s - Premier League 2
Harry White - Undisclosed - Gloucester - National League South
    Ryan Williams - 200k - Fulham - Championship
Adam Hammill - Free Transfer - Without a club

I'd say we're shopping in a similar pool to the one we were then.

Yes but he was very slow initially and took time to adjust to the English game. He came on a bit though…

Blasphemy!! Punishable by being sat on, by a not insubstantial gentleman in a shiny, pink leotard..

He was never slow, probably finding his feet would better describe it

Going back a few more years, Alistair Millar & Bobby Doyle came from Scottish junior football, Mick Butler came from Worsbrough Bridge and Anton Otulakowski came from Ossett (I think!).

I don't think Ally would survive pre season these days but I wouldn't mind the other three in the current squad.

I think most of the footballers from yesteryear would become used to the increased intensity of modern day training. Just as most modern day footballers would adjust to the more brutal tacking & fouling, as well as the poor quality of pitches.

To be fair to Ally he is 71 now so you’re probably right about him not surviving pre season.

Most of those listed were easily the best players in the teams we signed them from. Not sure that’s true of the current lot. Not that I’d write them off for that but we aren’t comparing apples with apples.
