Despite all of the pre-season shenanigans, I'm as excited as a kid at Christmas to be back at the Well on Saturday. Another year, another new man in the dugout. Swapping the Florida sunshine for South Yorkshire's monsoon season is Neill Collins. Alongside him is Yorkshire footballing cult hero, Jon Stead. It just so happens that our new management duo's last league defeat at Tampa, was the same weekend as the reds last regular season victory, at home to Oxford. Despite all of the pre-season question marks over the squad, management and recruitment, the bookies have us as overwhelming 3/4 favourites to beat a Port Vale side, who ended last season just 3 places and 4 points above the league 2 trap door. Port Vale never looked in any danger of relegation last season, but have only won 4 times since the turn of the year. Their last away league victory was on news year day, and even that was at league 1's worst side last season, Forest Green. All season, they only managed 20 points on their travels, with Cambridge being the only side still in the division with a worse away record last season. In contrast, Oakwell was something of a fortress in the second half of last season, with 15 wins and 3 defeats in the last 18 Oakwell ties in all competitions. Of course, those defeats all came in contrasting circumstamces; the debacle of the Bolton game, the humbling of the Ipswich game, and the indifference of the Peterborough game. In head to head competition, our record with Port Vale has been mixed in the few Oakwell meetings this century. We've won 2, drawn 3 and lost 2 since the year 2000, with our most recent victory coming courtesy of Ben Pearson and an own goal in a 2-1 win under Danny Wilson (I think). Our 1-1 draw last season (Kitching with the goal), was one of the few times where we took the lead in a game and failed to see it out. Our starting 11 on that occasion is likely to be very different to the one we go with on Saturday however. I fancy a low scoring, cagey affair to start the season. Whilst I think Port Vale will be tight defensively, I don't think they have a great attacking threat. I'm going for a 1-0 home win, with Watters getting on the scoresheet inside the first 15 minutes.
I’m fairly confident for this season, tipping top six. But I am not expecting a flying start and, with this being our new manager’s first competitive game with us, I am thinking a draw. 1-1.
2-1 reds. Not convinced with what I’ve seen at the back so will probably concede. But we’ve got goals in us. Styles and Norwood to bag.
4-2. Norwood and Styles with two penalties each for us. Edit: - It now looks like Callum's going to have to slot away all four of our penalties.
4-1 to us. Possibly after conceding first. Best to get that monkey off our backs. Any midfield with Styles and Connell pulling the strings is likely to be far, far too good for most League 1 sides. Especially one which struggled badly last season.
I think we’ll absolutely batter them. 3-0 maybe. They will be piss poor this season. Our troubles will start after the Bristol game.
We’re looking incredibly strong going forward but question marks in our defence. 6-6 written all over it.
