As a big fan of Norwood and sad (I can't spell gutted) to see him go,is it the player who's shown a lack of ambition.? He said the deal to Oldham had been on going and he was weighing up his options. This sounds to me like Barnsley have possibly told him there won't be another contract after his current one expires and his agent has touted him around to get him a contract where he can potentially play longer hence making himself more money. Either way good luck James I was personally glad we signed you and I never slated you before you even kicked a ball for us,the same people who now proclaim the club has let them down.
He is a few weeks off 33 and can't do 90 minutes. This time next year he will be nearly and another season less likely to get plenty of minutes under his belt, so it's fair to say at the end of this season we wouldn't have offered him a new contract. At Oldham he will be the best striker in the league and could be there for three seasons. That's security for him.
He also resembled the Michelin man until mid October. A big problem with all the starch based delicacy's on offer in Lancashire.
I don't think it's as black and white as that. If he was on 3k a week with us (that's a guess by the way) then I'm pretty sure he'd be nowhere near our highest paid player. Oldham offer him a longer contract on the same money, making him their highest paid player by some distance, and giving him much more financial security.
Don’t even need to do that, 1 year on 3k with us or 2 years on 2k (same as John Rooney) and he earns more, local and the sell of ‘going for it’ this year as per Unsworth and his comments all of a sudden doesn’t look that unattractive for an individual in the twilight of his career.
I agree, for me there is something more there than us just releasing a player, I mean he's hardly likely to come out and say "I know I'm pretty much knackered regarding a full game" neither is the club either that ort he's rubbed somebody up the wrong way? manager etc
Let's all pile on Norwood and other fans to make sure no one dare whisper anything against Khaled and the board. I personally never say a negative word when any player signs @Brian Mahoneys Waist but I'm concerned at losing what we know we have on and off the pitch with Norwood . The same people who go on about people perpetually having a go at the club jump to discredit players. I haven't a clue what's gone off, but it seems very snide to just point in James direction . Yes, it might be the right decision in retrospect and i hope it is because we need promotion this season. We're all fans, sometimes our opinions are right, sometimes they're wrong be that about players, CEOs , the board, fellow fans etc. Be nice if come 5 pm we could discuss the result without digging at each other be it happy clappers or doom and gloom merchants.
He will earn more in his 2/3 years at Oldham than in his 1 year with us. He can't really be taking risks at his age by seeing out his year with us and seeing what comes his way next summer. He could get injured in that time or lose his form and then it's harder for him to pick up a long term deal like Oldham have given him.
Or 1 year plus promotion with us and more clubs possibly interested in him for a final payday!? And maybe we keep him on as an impact sub in the Championship?
I think had we sold him to a rival in our division, I could understand the uproar. The lad’s dropped down to the National League.
I think this makes a lot of sense. I would say my gut feeling is that this was a decision by the manager. I think we extended Norwoods contract at Duff's request even though he's not the sort of player that fits the clubs long term plans or philosophy. I suspect Collins was asked if he wanted him and expressed a preference to bring in his own player or to develop younger players (which is meant to be his preference) There's part of me that thinks we might be about to sign Billy Sharp or someone of a similar ilk.
Helen I haven't seen anyone pile on James. What you will see are people trying to make sense why he would leave us and drop down 2 divisions. I don't get the continuous attack at Khaled and especially JAQ when events happen at the club.
I've said the same Collins has made way for a new striker, that's why the number 9 shirt is still free. Maybe Collins and Billy Sharp are good mates from old.
Unlikely given his age though, where as this is guaranteed. Also doubt he’s had managed to save a substantial amount of money to retire on being mainly a lower league player so also possibily a factor. 1 injury, 1 lack of form or fall out of favour and that’s all out the window.
You touch on a very valid point for me. It seems some fans on here want to turn on others and point score which has been increasing gradually and seems to have reached new heights this summer. Maybe that’s just frustration building up amongst the fan base, IDK. What I do know is we all support Barnsley and arguing amongst ourselves achieves nothing.
