If you want a good laugh, go on Stoke's forum and read their thread about our result. https://oatcakefanzine.proboards.com/thread/309364/barnsley-7-port-vale
Isn't it weird that we and our neighbours Rotherham, got both of the 'Potteries' teams on the opening day.
How dare they go arguing with each other, and slagging each other off with words like happy clapper and tinpot ehh lol. I thought that was our job. It just shows how we all as fans, no matter which club it is, go through the same feelings and do ultimately want the same thing. To see their own club do well, and to see their rivals do badly.
Goals win you games. Eg if Southampton had put more emphasis on actually putting the ball in the net, instead of tippy tapping, Wednesday would be bottom on about -10 GD
Thanks thats quite a good read - a lot of the posts look very familiar I particularly liked tiese "The fact we've scored 4 goals, on the opening day of the season, for the first time since 1957 and this is at the top of the board.... Yes, I just put it back there! But come on!" "Yep, the stats are hilarious Vale had 13 shots (unlucky for them!) Barnsley 12 Vale had 51% possession Barnsley had 8 shots on target and scored 7 of them. It could literally never happen again! The Vale summariser on Radio Stoke said the Vale keeper had “very little to do” "
If anyone looks at this from outside our fan base I'm sure all would be thinking wow did we play against 10 men? Imho...they were better first half, yet found themselves 2 down...second half they capitulated. It was never 7...0 kind of game but for more than I care to remember that was the best I have ever seen our shot/goal ratio, literally everything we did was a goal. I'm hoping this continues and its down to great coaching.
It was one of the most clinical performances I've ever seen from us. The xg stats back that up, we scored 7 with an xg of 1.56 and they scored 0 with an xg of 1.46.
Still no idea how that works - we created 6 clear cut chances (7 if you count the Cole shot blocked by Watters) I only remember them creating two the header that was brilliantly saved , and the guy that ran the length of the pitch but didnt get a decent shot away You have to admit we looked like scoring every time we attached and they didnt really so would expect their xg to be significantly lower than ours
I agree with most of that and whilst I want to see us winning every match I hope they are not like Saturdays. 7 0 and it didn't excite me. Can't wait to see how we measure up against a better team and one that doesn't capitulate. On Saturday a better team would have punished us first half.
A once in a generational score line and you weren't impressed? I wonder what Red Rain thinks about the new tactics. Or indeed Michael Duff's. #bringbackminorityreport
Seen us put 7 past Huddersfield and 10 past Heart of Oak in a friendly. Both were good games to watch. Thought we were poor first half and they capitulated 2nd. As a game of football I wasn't impressed but I wasn't unhappy with 3pts, top of league and good debuts by the young centre halves.
Huddersfield was 25 years ago now though. I was there that night but wasn't there on Saturday. Doubt I'll see us score 7 again for another 25 years unless it's a Collins thing that we start doing it every week and it gets boring.
I looked at the stats on Saturday, read the comments on here and read the whole of the match thread on the Vale forum. I assumed from all that we did pretty well for a purple patch but were outplayed for the first 45 minutes and it was one of those days. i watched the full game this morning and, yes, Vale were very strong first 20 minutes and it was a game where lots came off for us. But...once the first goal went in and we started to settle down our passing and movement was way too good for them to handle. They couldn't live with us and only got a respite when we started to ring the changes with substitutions.
