Are they both good enough reasons to risk your life on a small boat? If you have family here then surely you can take the legal route into the country?

Not only that, but look how much they paid for it. £1.6 billion to rent it for 18 months. It costs a fraction of that to build a brand new one that you would own. It wouldn’t cost that to send them on holiday on a luxury cruise for 18 months. Then there’s the mooring fee on top. Look who’s benefiting from housing them on the Bibby and it’s not the refugees and it’s not you.

Well people do it, so it is obviously a good enough reason as far as they are concerned. I think the family route in only applies to immediate family and not extended family.

Only if immediate family. I’m going to be honest, if I suddenly had to flee the country for my life the first place I’d think of going is to my mate in Luxembourg. I’d have to pass through a few places to get there but once I did I’d know I’d have somewhere safe to live for a little while, someone I know and trust and help to begin a new life. That would be by aim, to get to her and hope everything would sort itself out. I’d have no official claim as she’s just a friend, not a partner, parent or child, but that’s where I would be headed.

These asylum seekers who have travelled half way across the world to come to England going through many countries which aren't in war. Is odd in its self but having live close to 2 very decent hotels that have now been shut and are full of asylum seekers, every time I drive past and see these people walking around near the hotels it's always groups of young healthy men. In over a year not once have I seen women and children.

When you consider that we regularly hear that there are many jobs we can't fill since the bone-headed decision to leave the EU it must connote both a lack of intelligence and a failure of leadership for those in authority not to deal properly with these applications and find a way to put these people in to the jobs we can't fill.

The second thing that strikes me is that for those fortunate to live and make their living in this still comparatively wealthy country, to deny that opportunity to others - particularly those fleeing desperate situations - suggests a particular meanness of spirit.

My father and his friends would go out around Barnsley. They were spat on by the local lads who also made animal noises at them because they couldn't speak English.

Do you not understand that this is the Tories fault not the asylum seekers?

The asylum system is completely broken so no one is being processed. Instead of spending 8 million a year on hiring staff that can properly vet applicants the Tories have created the biggest backlog in any modern country and spend 8 million a NIGHT in hotels for this backlog. Vet them properly, send the ones home who don't qualify or are here illegally, and get the legal ones working and paying taxes.

    It's so so simple.

If they want to stop these cúnting boats they could also invest in a centre to vet asylum cases in France, thus creating a safe passage and stopping the boats and criminal gangs in one stroke. If there is a safe and legal passage, we can then return anyone who arrives illegally. It also stops people dying and risking life in the Channel, but of course no one in power cares about that.

I know poor spelling and grammar isn't necessarily an indication of intelligence but there seems to be a strong correlation between those who are linguistically challenged and those who hate immigrants coming into our pesky country.

    Great post.

The government appeal to the knuckleheads with the slogan “stop small boats” here’s a thing…put them on a ferry, precess them correctly in a humane and decent manner and return those who the laws dictate are safe at home to their home and it’s stopped in an instant. Literally stopped overnight.

It’s a really really simple thing to do but of course they’ve got to create an enemy who they can let the simpletons blame.
