It defeats object for me. Nice gentle slope to a lift or stairs. What happened to the camber. Did they run out of space or money? What if you don't like lifts?

Saw it for the first time on Saturday before the match and I was struggling to see the point of it (expense-wise I mean). It looks modern, granted, but it seems an awful amount of money to spend on getting people over a railway line. I obviously couldn't get up close to it but I presume the only way to get wheelchairs and push chairs up it is by using the lift. I can see some queues building up there if this is the only way. Also from a football fans point of view it dumps everyone on the old CEAG building side of the road so there will be hundreds/thousands maybe trying to cross that road to get onto the other side and head to Oakwell, and the reverse at 6pm (when the match finishes :)).

Every iteration of the plan had lifts. I believe the lifts have capacity for over 20 people at once - or at least they did in the initial capacity assessment.

Think it looks smart and in keeping with the rest of the work in that vicinity. Also a large part of the money not funded by council.

This has been addressed in quite a few of the other posts about the bridge. Ultimately, that’s where it goes. I believe the council are reviewing the road arrangements at that side with the intention of adding a pedestrian crossing. Let’s remember though, this isn’t a bridge just for football fans.

Was surprised it was on that side of the road when I looked at it the other day. Its going to look great but would agree about the cost.

Beautiful bridge, excellent landmark for the town centre. Can't wait for the rest of the developments. Hopefully my house price goes up and l can retire early and **** off to Italy.

Yes I understand all that but I was just offering a personal viewpoint having seen it for the first time. I happened to have an hour to spare on Saturday so had a bimble around the new centre then crossed the line via the bus station/railway station then on towards Oakwell. I agree with others that it is a very smart addition to the new development and I just hope the lowlifes with their spray cans haven’t defaced it within days of opening

It was scheduled for October and the biggest pieces of work are complete. They only need to install the lifts, balustrade, and finish the public realm improvements - which are already about 50% complete, but you never know.

There’s plenty of lighting and CCTV to catch them if they do! You can’t please everyone. I’m sure a lot of the public wouldn’t have been happy if the council had decided to increase costs by going with a longer bridge deck, and having to purchase part of the bingo car park - just so it could land on that side of the road.

Think the bridge looks great, I have always had issues with the side of the road it lands on.
The slopes from the lift look like they may be an issue pushing a wheelchair.

I doubt that these little scrotes would be put off by CCTV and lighting. It just increases the challenge.

As for increasing the size of the bridge it would certainly not have been popular to spend another few millions on it to do so. However, dropping where it does isn't a lot of use to anyone who lives in those streets across the road or football fans heading to the ground. Could be a dangerous crossing that - add it to the mayhem of Oakwell Lane after a match :(

Don't think 25% increase in building materials during the construction process has helped to be fair. Remember someone saying the construction firm should cover the increase but how long will they stay afloat if they have to do that for every project they undertake

That was my impression too unless the traffic management is here to stay on match days. They might have to hold away fans back too to prevent cars heading for the slip road up to the Eastern Relief road not stopping for pedestrians.
