bu not selling all our better players in one go. One a season has usually been the case. Sometimes not even that.
Exactly this. Our strategy has clearly worked at other clubs, most notably Brentford and Brighton. The difference is these clubs pay more for a player in the first place which means they sell for more, have investors who will bankroll it, and just sell no more than 2 players a season. The first two of these we can’t do much about but the number you sell we can control. Of our key ‘assets’ we’ve lost Mads and to a lesser degree Collins. If we lose Styles, Kitching, Williams and Kane that’s way too many to be sustainable. Although I’d be disappointed, I can begrudgingly accept losing 1 of those but no more.
I agree and theres no sign that we are selling all our players at one go just social media speculation.Like I said though its a fine balancing act.
I think we are seeing the impact of the loss in the play off final coming through. Another year in league one really places the finances under pressure. Players leaving is inevitable the key element is getting the value to sustain the club and allow an element of reinvestment to rebuild.
Problem is we did well last year but didn't achieve anything fell at the last hurdle. Did we under active and many including myself underestimate how good the players were? Yes I think so. Mads has gone premier league, Collins the championship, Thomas sold to cov, kitch championship interest, connell one of the best midfielders in the league, kane championship interest. Based on that maybe we underachived in not getting promoted. The problem is clubs have seen us do well with a young squad and now eye are better players up these player know they can play a division higher and can double if not treble there money. Obviously there going to want out.
This whole conversation should really be moot - as someone correctly mentioned earlier, why would we sell now? It would make zero financial sense. A player who is clearly improving, with ample time on his contract, now captain, should be kept, developed and look to be sold when at peak value. The ideal situation in that sense would be, he has an outstanding season, we get promoted, he STILL has ample time on his contract. How much would he be worth in January 2025 on the basis of Kitching being captain of a championship level BFC? Then, you are talking about an investment that makes a significant impact to us.
100% underachieved. Playoffs were reasonable as the club was a shambles and it would take time to gel the squad. We were miles the better team, with 10 men, and a stonewall penalty not given. On merit, we should be up. Had any luck gone our way, we would be up. But that, unfortunately is the lovely personp shoot that is the playoffs. Especially when you're up against the spawniest of teams in SWFC
Yes looking back on it the slow start and the average strike force cost us. I think duff knew this and that his team would most likely be picked apart and his stock was high so jumped ship himself.
We are just far too nice, it's indicative of the club that we've only sold 1 player for more than the £4.5m we got for Ashley Ward nearly 24 years ago
Wednesday finished 10 points above us. If it was down to merit entirely they would be up anyway, never mind the luck of a play off final game
I'm not so sure - assuming we lose a couple more from the defence, it's pretty much the same as the summer after the last time we went up...
In the Chronicle, Doug says that we have turned down 2.5m, 3m with add ons for Kitching from Coventry.
5.9 & 4 if you believe transfermarket https://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/marc-roberts/profil/spieler/284959
Why does every club sell their headcoach and captain every season like us. Have we always sold our hc/manager and club captain every season for the last 100 years. If we keep disappointing our fan base everytime we seem to be making progress as a club soon, we won't have a fan base. Look how the rest of the clubs owned) (or part owned) by this consortium have faired. There is a pattern that have emerged and it is not good one from a fan point of view.
We may be eyeing up a captain selling record. Andersen went, Kitching looks likely to follow him. Then will we give the armband to Kane or Williams? And will they stay for another 20 days? 3 captains in one window??
Experience? Collins had league one and championship experience, kitch had championship experience and league two, luke thomas had championship and league one, kane had championship and league one, Williams championship and league one, devante championship and league one, connell championship experience, Norwood league one and two.... I could go on. The fact is last season's squad had loads of experience but many including myself wrote them off thinking we would be botton end but infact we underachieved.
I remember Patrick Cryne saying on Facebook that we'd got £5.5 million for Mawson. We also got a 15% sell-on clause, which made us a fair bit when he moved from Swansea to Fulham for £15 million. I think it was £3.5 million for Roberts. Transfermarkt, a German website, quotes figures in euros. By the way, Patrick also said he paid a mere £150k for Winnall.
