John Russell!! This lad is 100% a target for the boo boys…….in patches yesterday he got caught with the ball and at times are the wrong pass but he played well the first few games and was steady away yesterday. I know folk can have an opinion but the abuse he got yesterday, from folk I was stood with too, was uncalled for. We’re 3 games in n folk are on his back already
Didn’t think he was any worse than Kane or Styles yesterday and played well in the first two games in my opinion.
You’re right…….he’s a straight forward player, always shows for the ball and gives it to someone who can make it happen……the abuse he gets his baffling
Some must think shouting abuse at our own players is a great idea and is the key contribution to making them play better and want to be here. Russell is a quality player and we are lucky to have him, wait for the uproar when some other club bid for him and for some unknown reason he chooses to leave.
A think at times cos he doesn’t race about folk think he’s ‘lazy’…….lime a said, he shows for the ball, breaks play up and let’s others in front of him attack. Our fans do my head in at times with there negative abuse bile they spout
He’s also had a very short preseason and only playing as much football as he is because we have 4 midfielders missing with suspension injuries and illness. He’ll come good, he just needs time to adjust.
He’s a big unit and sometimes looks very slow hopefully with game time he’ll improve and push on speed wise
Some football fans, no matter what the club, love to abuse their own players. I honestly don't know what they get out of it or where their enjoyment comes from. If I'd spent 90 minutes abusing the team and they stick in a last minute winner I'd feel embarrassed with myself rather than elated. There's plenty of people do it. I can only assume they make themselves feel better by picking on someone else. It's especially ironic given that if you put said abuser on a pitch with the bloke who'd "won a raffle" and "wasn't fit to wear the shirt" they'd get rings run round them and made to look a fool.
Reminds me of Miles Addison, big lummox with a turning circle similar to that of the arc royale! Clearly though he’s got some ability, but I just fear league 1 is a bit too physical for his game. Would probably smash it up in a less intensive league.
I thought he played well in the first half yesterday but slowly got worse as the game went on, maybe tiredness? He’s clearly not Luca in covering the ground and making interceptions but I like him. He uses the ball well most of the time. I think he’ll come good. I also think Watters is becoming the new whipping boy too.
Never understand why anyone would pay to go to a game then shout abuse at our own players. few years back me n a mate were ejected from ponty at a cup game cos we had a go at a nutter who just hurled abuse at the lads from the kick off. Al comment on here if ah think someones poor (Soz bt ah dunt rate Russell) but never at a game..
MW needs to start to use his size more and knock folk about…….yesterday was crying out for a ‘Norwood’ to upset their CB’s……..
Reminds me of the Cole thread this, where cos Cole doesn’t run around like a headless chicken he gets called lazy etc.
I’m not sure he’s that kind of players though. I see him more as a playing on the shoulder of the defender and getting in the box. I think we still need a big striker to hold the ball up. Even if it’s just an alternative to what we’ve got right now.
It's not abuse to say he was slow and got caught in possession when he shouldn't, that happened several times yesterday and much more than it should. It's not abuse to say that once the pace of the game increased he seemed lost and it just passed him by, it happened for most of the second half yesterday. It's not abuse to say that he isn't fit enough and after about an hour he was blowing out of his arse meaning that every time Rovers broke he was left stranded upfield dawdling back and unable to protect the defence. People round where I was saw all that and commented without abusing him. It doesn't mean he's a bad player either but if he puts up a string of performances like that he will become one. In his defence yesterday also I do think Collins would have taken him off early in the second half if he'd anything credible on the bench to replace him with. Genuinely felt sorry for Collins yesterday with the lack of depth of quality in what he's been given to work with so far.
He's been given at least five other players who are either automatic first eleven or just outside it but are currently unavailable. Them's the breaks at a L1 team. You can't afford a strong enough squad that will cover that kind of loss.
He’s slow, walks quicker than he runs. I don’t rate him very highly. But anyone getting on a players back whilst he’s on the pitch in a Barnsley shirt isn’t worth worrying about, waste of air and snap some folk. I don’t think he’s great but I want him to do nothing but succeed and prove me wrong whilst he’s here.
