If we're going to speculate, is it not reasonably likely that where a complainant has reconciled with the defendant the further evidence might take the form of a statement from the defendant that no offence was committed, regardless of whether that is true or not?

As things stand the evidence in the public domain suggests that he is an utter scumbag. He can address that if he wants to but hasn't done so as yet.

A retraction statement, I think it's usually called Mr Mansfield? I don't think anybody would argue with your assessment of his character.

Ye considered that but surely that option must not be available because it would have been exercised already and we wouldn't be having this conversation.

Good on her. It wouldn't be easy for someone to turn their back on their club.

Looks like she fell pregnant in about November 2022, gave birth on 12th July this year, presumably when he had a restraining order against him. Probably why the case was dropped?

I am sorry but no. Pornography and society hasn't 'confused' whether or not rape is acceptable. There was nothing what he did that was 'confusing' at all. It wasn't a case of 'oops I thought rape was ok'

Stuff like this is probably why trying to debate this on a football forum was a bad idea. My point is more that the content being thrown down young men's, and also young women's, throats across social media and the internet is setting the context for what is deemed 'ok' in their intimate relationships & why consent is needing to be a more formal conversation educationally. Pretty sure there was a study about it.

And, just to make sure, at no point was I implying or suggesting that rape was/is acceptable or anything but abhorrent.

What he did wasn't debatable though and wasn't because of porn or a little oopsy caused by not having a formal conversation Abu consent. It was the actions of a disgusting piece of **** who attempted to force someone physically. To blame that on confusion and society and porn is to excuse his actions. It's got about as much to do with porn and society as murders have to do with call of duty.

Oh also I know you wouldn't defend rape or anything like that. Known you long enough on here to work out by now that you have strong morals.

I kind of suspect that statement was put out as a ‘tester’.
It’s not like he was found innocent the case was dropped, not an uncommon scenario when the defendant can afford top lawyers.

I'm not going to even begin to defend anything that he's done, but I think it's too easy for the club to just drop him. I definitely don't think they should restore him to the team, but I do think they owe him a duty of care.

He's been there since before he was a teenager. Being at a football club like that isn't going to be like being at school, where you naturally develop normal relationships with other individuals - it's the club that have always held his contract who are at least partially responsible for how he was raised. The fault is completely with him for what he's done, but given what I can only describe as his abnormal upbringing I think Manchester United have to take some responsibility as well. I'd like to see them declare that they're putting something - or a lot of things - in place to try to make sure this doesn't happen again.

The closest comparison I can think of - where kids get taken into a system at a young age - is the priesthood. The issues related to that are obviously myriad, but he's ended up in a similar situation but with a hell of a lot more money and celebrity to burn. For me, it's at least partially on these massive clubs to ensure that the children they take in are raised properly.

Let's be honest, if he wasn't as talented and young as he is, he'd have been let go ages ago.

He did trivialise it though, even if accidentally. Including the line about having had consensual sex with her in the past is playing down the severity of it. It is absolutely irrelevant. I agree with his point about an adult not being on the same scale as a baby in terms of the depravity of the act and don’t think that comment was trivialising it. Bringing up the consensual sex 100% was though and shows an unconscious bias to even think it was slightly relevant to the situation.

My only comment on this is a personal opinion. People are implying that the fact they are still together and are having a baby means he is likely to be innocent otherwise the girlfriend wouldn’t still be with him. However, we know that lots of victims find it very difficult, for whatever reasons, to leave their abusers permanently. I would argue that there’s no way he would stay with, and have a baby with, someone who faked a rape video. He could have gone to prison; he may still lose his job, a career that he has put his heart and soul into since being a child; he could have/has lost friends due to this; his reputation will be tarnished for the rest of his life. Would he really stay with the woman who lied about something like that to the whole world?

I hadn't even thought of that. I've seen many people suggest that she wouldn't stay with a rapist but you're right why would an innocent man stay with someone who set him up in an attempt to ruin his life with a set up video containing a disgusting accusation?

Yep, absolutely. My post applies to everybody who these big clubs take on as a child, even if they don't eventually "make it".

Yeah I get what you are saying.

I still think Merde Tete was taken out of context though. With any offence there is a degree of severity to it, that doesn't mean that some forms of rape are more acceptable- none are, and all are disgusting. I think it would be fair to say that a stranger rape would be more severe in most cases than say a couple where consent was assumed by a party of either sex when it in fact wasn't (just an example, not the Greenwood situation). He was replying to someone and half the post was conveniently removed when quoted, taking that element out of context.

Just want to make it very clear that any form of rape is despicable.

That's a very fair point @JamDrop. The reason why I mentioned it was to make a comparison with the baby who is (obviously) completely unable to give, or indeed deny consent, having zero understanding of the situation, but I can see why what I put could be misconstrued. When discussing something like whether one rape is "worse" than another, we're already in a complete minefield. Any point that you make can inadvertently leave you looking like you're going off in a direction that you never intended, such is the nature of these topics.

It maybe should be. Not because they get so much wrong, but the shocking underfunding and how long it takes cases to be heard.
