Horrendous. Grantham was our local hospital when Beverley Allitt was committing her crimes. Can't believe that something similar has happened again.

It's a truly horrifying case. Having been watching the ongoing trial I was shocked to hear of the details but more the realisation of how much trust we have in medical professionals.

I can only think of the families who have been affected by this. Their hearts will never be whole as result of this.

I know plenty will be saying she needs to be punished (her prison sentence will reflect that). But it makes me question whether some people can ever be rehabilitated into useful members of society.

It just beggars belief that, not only can someone do this, but for how long and to so many she did it to. Best wishes to all concerned

Surely the system if there is one should have been picking up on the deaths much quicker.

You'd like to think that the checks and balances out in after Allitt, Shipman etc were sufficient. Sadly not. Those poor families, can't begin to imagine the pain they've been and are going through.

According to the subsequent reports seven different consultants tried to report it using the appropriate procedure and were forced to apologise to Letby and threatened with action from the GMC (regulator). If true it feels like a case of corporate manslaughter from the trust to me.

Everyone has their own tolerance when it comes to the death penalty - this one is mine. Hope the poor souls that perished rest in peace.

Under staffing doesn't help check and balancing.

There'll end up being a Public Enquiry. It appears the medical staff flagged it but were ignored.

But that never happens. Why were the trust backing a nurse so much I wonder, usually they'd be the one hung out to dry?

That was my first thought when this case first came to light. Tim Harford did an excellent podcast about how Shipman was able to carry on undetected for so long, despite the signs all being there. It's very sad, but well worth a listen.

The system follows the money, unfortunately. Child Protection Services are a disgrace to civilisation.

Tricky one. I am fundamentally opposed to the death penalty for several reasons so even in this case I wouldn't support it, though I can quite understand this could be the sort of exceptional case that makes some less sure.

Especially considering that it may help the relatives of the victims feel the best possible justice has been done.
She has to get a full life tariff with no possibility of parole though and I will be quite surprised if she gets anything other than that.

I am all for rehabilitation over punishment especially to prevent re-offending but this is a case where this clearly isn't possible or the right thing to do. No way could she ever be allowed out into society again.

Just hope it brings some sort of closure to the families though nothing can put right the wrong they all suffered.

And so is our so called government. This ultimately is where the buck should stop. But unfortunately we all know it won’t.
