Clearly it was her, but do you not think that if one of the consultants wanted to frame her they could just blame her and then stop once she left?
Alternatively there's the fact that due to deaths occurring the unit was downgraded around the time she left. This meant it no longer dealt with the most premature babies, so deaths would have been expected to reduce anyway. I'm not saying that I think she didn't do it, a jury has heard months of evidence and decided she did. But anyone advocating for the death penalty should google Lucia de Berk.
I don’t think this is another Lucia de B. case but that does highlight one issue with the death penalty. There are plenty more. The main one being the fact it would clog up already an overstretched legal system and cost millions per person sentenced to death. Far too many people seem to think we could bring back capital punishment and that would lead to the convict being executed in a short time and save the money of keeping them in prison. That is complete rubbish. The only comparable ‘western’ and ‘developed’ country which has capital punishment is the USA, though not all of it. It is a federal sentence option, and also still permitted by about half the states for none-federal cases. A lot of the states have it as a sentence but don’t carry it out currently - and overall the average amount of time from sentencing to execution is ten years. Often much more. Japan has similar numbers. Even ignoring the barbaric nature of it and the risk the finality of it presents in cases of miscarriages of justice, it would be nigh on impossible to administrate and legislate. There is no place for capital punishment in a properly developed society. The trouble is ours is regressing massively and a suggestion of exploring the possibilities of reinstating it would likely be a political vote winner. And I wouldn’t put it past the current lot in power to try anything in desperation to cling on. The Daily Heil and the Torygraph are already testing the water by publishing apparent poll figures.
https://deathpenaltyinfo.org/executions/2023 It's really deterred any killings in the USA... not. Lower your moral compass to that of a murderer & you get nowhere. All start carrying guns & be paranoid, like the good old US of A. Get more killings, more grief, more hatred. One must accept that there are out of millions of people someone like Letby. The justice system has found her guilty after 10 months of a trial. In some countries, like Saudi Arabia people get 10 minutes & are guilty of just being gay, but that is OK? She has the rest of her life in clink, looking round her back for a knife, a beating, whatever. What she has done is abhorrent & she has the rest of her miserable life to accept that. Our country is badly flawed, but I would not for one minute think it would be improved by state sponsored revenge. PS, look at how long most of these were incarcerated for, the lengthy appeals, etc, when considering the costs.
Not remotely. That alone is strong circumstantial evidence. Courts in the UK usually need more than that to secure any conviction, although in Letby's case there was more evidence.
They'd have to withdraw us from the Council of Europe in order to do so. Never going to happen, thankfully.
Never going to happen. Can see why some would want it in this case but I just hope the rest of her days in jail are like a living hell. Definitely someone who should never be released.
Yep. That's why she wasn't done for all the deaths, even though everyone knows she did them; simply not enough direct evidence.
Or maybe some of the other deaths has nothing to do with her - you cant make that statement that everyone knows she did them. Its irrelevant anyway as there was clearly enough evidence in far too many cases As we are rehashing the death penalty debate again - this clip makes the case against better than I ever could
I think the other thing to remember here, while a lot of people are focussing on the deaths, there also seems to have been a lot of infants left badly disabled, bless em!
For the rest of her life she should have 24 hour recordings of ‘laughing giggling’ babies played in her cell.
They keep trying to - with the push to withdraw from ECHR - but that breaks the Good Friday Agreement *and* the devolution agreements, so it isn't going to happen.
I know someone who works in the Home Office. He said that they had to write memos to Amber Rudd as if they were writing so a child could understand them, but with Priti Patel they had to write them so a child of 5 could understand them
When I worked at HO (left in 2020) I dealt with one you mention. She seemed pretty switched on with some stuff - so much so I couldn't actually believe some of the stuff she put out publicly. But my overriding memory was not her intelligence - or lack of - but her distinct lacks of basic manners and general arrogance.
