If we’re bottom of the ‘food chain’ where does that put clubs such as Cheltenham , Forest Green, and any other ‘smaller club/ further down the football pyramid who we have taken players from? Not saying we are lower down than we’d all like to be, but bottom, come off it
Regularly read on here that some posters wont be happy until we borrow 10 zillion quid and bankrupt the club in the chase for glory..in actual fact I've never read anyone say that. My point is that we dont need to do this as we have actually possessed the squad in recent years to achieve the Championship dream but we as fans are told every year that unless we sell them we're going to the wall.. the so called Doom merchants on here are merely saying if we keep that model then what we've got now is it..there's no more..it's just rinse and repeat with talent we find serving another master while we languish in lg 1..hence comments on no ambition and no confidence in the board who tell us this won't happen this season then do exactly the same as the rest from previous years...Who's not nervous about Kitching,Williams,Connel and Kane in January with Styles then if not now....Meanwhile other clubs at our level seem to have much better retention than us...lets see who plays on the last day of this season who played at Wembley a few months ago..
Under our current model it is possible to reach the top end of the Championship. We proved that under Ismael. It's not possible, however, to do it consistently. It will always be cyclical.
It won’t be the way we work now. Too much turnover of players and head coaches to ever get back in that position again.
The turn over of head coaches isn't the club's fault. The turnover of players is always going to be a problem. Timing bringing a squad to it's peak isn't easy as we've been shown but it can be done. Evidenced by Hercky's team, Stendels etc.
Good debate and opinions from you guys. Am with Menai but respect those who are with Churton. yes we nearley made it with Val but became the only team relegated after a playoff season. Nearly made it again with Duff but now don't even know what the team is....retaining players is the key. no need for chuckin millions around.
No it's not. If you mean losing coaches. The stark reality is that if you want a coach with any kind of record of success they're going to want a release clause. If we don't agree with that then we're going to be sourcing coaches from places I know for a fact a large percentage of the fan base would be up in arms about.
We actively ask for the clause to be put in as it’s another form of making some money on a managerial change - weird how smaller clubs than us retain coaches yet ours usually jumps ship at the first club willing to pay the clause. There’s clearly a culture at the club that doesn’t retain either players or head coaches.
I think it's vital what money we have is spent wisely. Every signing is a gamble but Conway's squandering of much of our remaining transfer funds on the likes of Isseka and Oulare set us back years. You're right. Developing and selling at the right time is key. It's fine margins though. I'd imagine Cundy and McCarthy were envisaged as being a replacement for Andersen and would have been ready to seamlessly drop in. Unfortunately neither have been able to step up and we're left with a hole.
I'd love to see Wednesday's running costs/actual losses since Chansiri took over. Not including the fake investments.
With respect, is that a fact or just your opinion. Duff was actively offered a pay rise. But chose not to accept.
Surely the reality check is that the current owners ARE having to bankroll us multi-millions to tread water in division 3. Even with heightened transfer receipts over the last two Summers they have had to put in £10m (gross of the remaining takeover liabilities) in a little over a year. Another reality is that absolutely nobody is going to loan a club with no fixed assets and a negative net worth balance sheet a penny because there's nothing to secure the loan against! The only way forward is a modicum of further owner investment to get to the Championship and then operate within the income that that brings. We had the perfect opportunity this Summer and I fear that unless there is some clear qualitative squad improvement at the back and up front this week we will fall short again. It is unlikely that there will be anything like the kind of transfer fees brought in this Summer for the remaining contracted players next Summer and so staying in this division this season will see the owners having to put in another huge sum again for 2024/25, unless they get fed up of doing so.
Fair enough. Despite following a supposed policy of buy/develop/sell/build for the last several years. Seems the reality is buy/develop/sell/survive. Pretty dispiriting when you think about it.
