IIRC Grant Schapps (as Transport Secretary - although there have been a few recently) insisted on the ULEZ expansion as part of the TfL bailout during Covid (which was partially due to Johnson's mismanagement of the finances) - and now they are using it for political points scoring.

Or we could just ban the cars that don't, air pollution would be alot better force people to use public transport or get a complient car... but no, money and abit less pollution is better.

I should think the kick back against that would be even greater.
We tend to resist change, as a knee jerk reaction, before adapting and carrying on.

Fair question. Probably just goes into the general pot for spending on local services. Makes up the shortfall due to Government cuts to council budgets.

Read a group are going around vandalising them, keep up the good work, a stealth tax imo, whatever we do as a country in relation to the planet it will sink into insignificance when China, India , Russia are spewing out 5hit, not saying we shouldn't do our bit ( I think as a whole our country is doing OK) but imo its just about the coin and using the environment to get some people on side. Portsmouth have a clean air zone, councils will look at the gain in finances and reckon many more Towns and Cities will jump on this

Let's not forget that London has got a fantastic public transport network that is unlike anything the rest of the country can even dream of. Didn't they announce an EXTRA £1.2 billion quid of central government funding to transport for London last year?

Got absolutely no sympathy for Londoners who refuse to use the world leading public transport that they have whe the rest of the country can't even get to their local town centre because the bus service has been cut.

Not everyone can go to work via the train or tube what if your a trades man. Do you just put chop saw on tube?

The issue doesn’t appear to be Londoners as only 27% of them drive to work, whereas the rest of the country are in the 70’s & 80%’s.
South east as an example are at 75% & I would expect a lot of them will go into London for work.
That potentially creates another issue of where do these park on the ouitkirts.

Not knocking the idea, just not sure it’s a simple solution.

This is wrong on so many levels. While we are a small country with a small population compared to the rest of the world, our carbon footprint per person is far far higher than China and India etc. Our Industrial Revolution started the problems we are seeing today so we should at least have the good grace to be amongst the world leaders in doing something about it. Before anyone else points it out, The USA has the highest per capita carbon footprint in the world but at least Biden is doing something about it.
