For the first time in donkey's years this afternoon. All I can say is WOW! The place is superb and certainly something to be extremely proud of. A thumbs up to the staff at Spec Savers, too. Helpful, patient, professional and VERY young!
I saw you earlier Kev, it was Costa coffee you’d walked into not spec savers…god knows what that young girl thought when you were trying her glasses on
I asked the young lad, Roy, if I could get a pair of glasses to make me look like Brains. Young lad "Sorry, never heard of him". Me "Brains, from Thunderbirds". Young lad "Nope, sorry". Me "Where's my zimmer frame?"
I have to pick my new glasses up in a couple of weeks, old mate. Honestly, I couldn't believe the changes in the town and all for the better.
I completely agree Kev. I travel to home games from the Midlands and my son and I tend to drive up and go straight to the ground. I therefore haven't seen the town centre for perhaps 4/5 years. My two brothers joined us for the match against Oxford and we decided to travel early, have a look around town and something to eat and drink before the game. We were all really impressed, what an improvement! It really is something to be proud of and we'll definitely do it again sometime. It'll be even better when the bridge is open too!
The town centre is fantastic Kev. We are going in on the bus in a bit. Drink in Spiral City then dining at Istanbul Kitchen. Good night out.
Posted on an earlier thread how impressed my Taff relatives/friends have been when they come to Barnsley. The Penny Pie roundabout is superb as is the town centre. Old buildings and the new ones sit very comfortably together. Whoever is doing the planning is doing an excellent job. (the only building which I don't like is the block of flats behind MacDonalds (Morrisons) - looks cheap and plasticy)
That's because it is. It was an unfinished concrete shell for years, then someone bought it for about £250,000 and finished it off as cheaply as possible.
I think the builders went bust twice and in the end the block was sold to the highest (but very low) bidder. The flats typically go for £50-60k
Weren't they supposed to have fancy balconies at one point but something went wrong so they got rid of them?
As an 'outsider' now I think they've done a great job looks fantastic and they it's bringing people in from all over.
as you come off Jct 37of the M1 and head towards Barnsley - 400 metres - the Penny pie roundabout - bang next to Horizon School.
