I’m not convinced the head coach has that huge an influence on such decisions. I’m also not convinced the current head coach would have had the strength to tell his recruitment team he had doubts.
Not written him off at all! I just gave the 3 that I think are our best options at the minute - the 2 most experienced defenders and Lopata who I’ve got a good feeling about. Then there’s Shepherd, McCarthy, Mael and Williams as options too. I think Shepherd sounds promising, but we’re probably not expecting him to go straight in as a regular starter yet
We have a lot of numbers yeah. I wouldn’t have been averse to one or two leaving, even just on loan, to accommodate one more coming in to offer a bit of guile and know-how. It wouldn’t necessarily have been expensive to have brought in one older head with football league experience to lead the back line. I think not doing so puts unfair pressure on the lads we have. If Cundy and / or McCarthy are near fitness, it might be that they fill that requirement. To be clear, I’m not shouting against the sales of Andersen and Kitching. To get what appears to be £8million for them, with Mads only having a year left too, is sound business. Would have been foolish to not take that and secure the immediate future. I just think we could have just done with a bit of help for the lads we have at the back. I suspect we might need a Sollbauer like signing come january.
The current head coach was, by someone who knew him quite well, called the angriest man he'd ever met. I also read that he likes to play with a big centre forward up top. We now have one. I'd say Collins is well capable of making his presence felt.
