Wasn't Fleming a full-back? Although I think he played Sweeper on occasion - although under Machin most of the team played somewhere in defence...

I'm sure Fleming was prominently a full back?

Who straddled the line between genius and lunacy. In 100 years people will still talk about his 30 yard screamer own goal into the top corner when under absolutely no pressure. And wasn't it Futch that used to nutmeg strikers bringing the ball out of defence?

I think he played across the back four but my recollection of him is mainly sweeper, centre back. It's a long time ago though!

I used to say if Winnie (my first hero) didn't get the ball. Howard got the man. I actually favoured winnie. But both careers went in opposite directions. What was the reason winnie didnt press on , I forget.. He played over 400 games for us.

Fleming was signed as a full back, but played the majority of his games with us as a sweeper.

Was born to play that position (sweeper) for me. Great player.

Paul Futcher best one for me but has some stiff competition- watched us for 45 years and this has been our strongest position for me. We've had some amazing ones over the years McCarthy, Evans, Foster, Smith, Talgarth, Mads, Pinnock, Roberts , Mawson , De Zeeuw to name just a few

Futch is my favourite; De Zeuww and Steve Davis also great.

Never makes these lists but I loved watching Shotton play.

For me, that was down to the club's attitude at the time. There's no doubt in my mind that Eric could've had just as good a career further up the football pyramid as Pat did had he had the same opportunity. Clubs had far more control over players in those days.

Cheers. I had medical issues in my head. But didn't stop him from appearing for us.

Big Mick was just so consistently good for a long period of time. He very rarely made mistakes, but yes he was an "old fashioned" centre half.
He was fans player of the year 3 times out of 4 seasons.

Paul Futcher for me too, there have been some excellent ones over the years. How he never played higher is beyond me.
