Such a myth that he's never put a foot wrong for England. I think the stick he gets is very overblown. I think he's a decent, average premier league defender. Spurs under Conte would have been perfect for him. West Ham under Moyes is perfect for him. Manchester united under Ten Hag & England... not good enough.
I don't watch Premier League football. Other than watching Barnsley, the only other matches I watch are England games. I wouldn't say he's never made a mistake for England, I don't know any footballer you could say that about, but whenever I see him play for England he looks a fantastic centre half. Particularly when he's alongside Stones. The two of them have a real understanding and compliment one another. I'm particularly impressed with just how well he can pass the ball for someone who looks like he'd be a bit of a hoof ball merchant. I'm aware he's not had a great time at Man Utd, I know there's a huge swell of feeling that he shouldn't be in the England side, but I never see any of that and I'm not influenced by it. I only see him in an England shirt and the vast majority of the time he's exemplary. Quality own goal tonight like but that happens to the best of 'em.
Agree with Jay to be honest - no player is perfect but struggling to remember when he's let England down over the last few years. Him and Stones have had a decent partnership and he's weighed in with a few goals as well. Wouldn't class him as one of England's best ever CB but don't think he deserves some of the critiscm he gets
I agree that generally he's been pretty decent for England, although perhaps Stones makes him look that way in a similar way to Mads with Kitching.
He forms a good partnership with Stones but then Stones is probably the best centre half in the world so you’d expect anyone to look good at his side. I don’t think Harry has made too many errors playing for England but everyone’s time runs out. It seems reasonable for Southgate to have him in the squad but you’d put 2 or 3 others before him now.
The biggest problem he’s got is he’s got a manager that wants to play with a high line at club level & he can’t do it. He was fine at Man Ud when Mourinho was in charge & even Ole to a certain extent as they played deeper & relied more on counter attacks. You see it loads with centre backs over the years. I’ve heard fans rave about players like Keane & Tarkowski when they were solid at Burnley but they go to Everton & play further up the pitch & try to play more football & they get exposed. That’s why someone like Dunk is a good option for me as they play like a top international side at Brighton with how they try to dominate possession & play a high line. Maguire needs a move really or to hope that Ten Haag is sacked but I don’t think he’s got time for that with a major tournament coming next summer.
Agree with this. Always done great with England and now only being picked at cos of the Utd situation. In contrast to Phillps who’s never done anything of note at international level never mind at national level.
thing is that was then, not now. He hasn’t been deemed good enough to play at club level for ages and is nothing like match fit and when he has played looks like an accident waiting to happen.
Surely Pinnock can't be far off a call-up? Would seem an ideal replacement for Stones when he's injured.
