I learned bass largely to a book of scales and the tab of bloodsugarsexmagik by the chili peppers when I was 13/14, from being so ignorant that I didn't understand why the numbers didn't sound like the album and learning about tuning, hehe, then playing in a band. Haven't listened to them in decades but a great record to learn bass to. I learned the guitar by playing with a mate who was really good, and learning chords and songs from the complete beatles tab book. They have a mad range of chords across their body of work...

I taught myself about aged 15-18 forgot at uni did it all again about 25 then forget the again ten years ago. You find way to play what look like dreaded chords. I ignored songs in song books that had F or B for example but can play variations like x33210 for F or B7 for B but with a better guitar or capo barre chords sound smoother.
