20mpg speed limit

Given the roads in wales I'm not surprised it's lowered. Most of our B roads are better than their A ones. Drove from Tenby via north wales via the coastal A rds to get home. What a mare.

We have plenty of 20mph zones in england. Sheffield was the first to introduce one in 1991.
In Wales it'll be a 3rd of the 30mph zones reduced.

 

All the roads around my house are 20 (in Leeds, not Wales). You get used to it and it’s quite nice really going at a slower pace.

The arguments against amount to ‘I don’t like it’ and ‘it takes me slightly longer’. The argument for is pretty compelling though:

 

Aye, what's a couple of hundred dead kids a year compared to saving 5 minutes on a trip to Tesco?

 

Makes me cringe doing 30 and madman overtakes doing 50+ (in a 30) and ends up 3 cars in front when we get to traffic lights 3 miles later. I dont think 20 mph makes that much difference in built up areas with lights, roundabouts, junctions etc. But as shown can save lives.

 

I always laugh at them and give a little wave when I end up behind them at the traffic light, meaning they saved the grand total of the time it takes to travel the length of my car off their journey.

 

Amen to that, done it a load of times.

 

I’d be in 3rd gear all the time,that’s neither environmentally or economically friendly. Having said that there are places that do need lower speed limits, near schools etc

 

Aye a few dead kids or getting somewhere slightly slower. A difficult choice.

 

It’s not realistically going to make that much of a difference between 20 and 30 though. It’s not like every road is changing to a 20, it’s just residential areas. If it stops people getting knocked off bikes and/or being killed when knocked over then it’s worth the tiny inconvenience of changing down a gear in built up areas. There’s far too many road deaths and 3/4 of them happen on 30mph roads so something had to change. I’d be more likely to cycle on a 20mph road too so environmentally it may be a lot better if some drivers switch to cycling instead.

 

Not just kids minst.

I always find the figures for deaths interesting because I'd love to know the stats for how fast people are actually hit at not how fast the car was driving before it saw the pedestrian in the road.


Personally I think th biggest thing that should be done is people should be educated far more on not being an idiot and walking out into roads but out ever helpful government has instead given them the green light to do just that. I do get that things will always happen but the simple fact is that I can drive at 30mph down a road all day long and unless a pedestrian has walked out without looking I'll never ever hit anyone because they won't be standing in the road.

However I think the biggest thing that should be tackled is parking where it causes an obstruction or more importantly blocks views such as on junctions etc.

 

What about these morons that overtake a vehicle that's turning left, 1.5/2 seconds makes all the difference like.

 

I was just about to say that. People say kids because it’s emotive but then it makes people use the schools argument. Most people have a high chance of dying if they are hit at 30mph. Obviously they should look where they’re going but people don’t and I’d rather not kill an idiot who walks out in front of me, regardless of how stupid they were for doing it.

 

The stats will be crash tests and looking how many times the dummy ‘survives’ the impact. You’d presume most people would brake before hitting a person as they probably saw them at some point but the stats show what would happen at the speed limit as that is the speed they could technically be going at. It’d still scale down anyway to be safer anyway, whatever the speed the driver was going before they braked, a slower top speed would allow for a shorter braking distance.

 

Wish they’d introduce some 20mph zones around where I live. There’s some right Bell **ds who motor it down our road. God forbid if anybody walked out or was pulling out of their driveway.

 

It's just something that's always been interesting to me because I think it used to be the same argument/theory used for doing 30 instead of 40 . I'm sure that if I hate someone at 40 there's an 80 percent chance they'll die, hit them at 30 theres an 80 percent chance they'll survive. Now apparently its a 40 percent at 30 and 10 at 20. Just makes me wonder how they arrive at the figures.

A bit like (ok nothing like but this one bugs me) when they advertised NEW washing powder that gets whites white and then they show the old one that does a terrible job. Hang on last year you said it got whites white. What's happened?

 

Haha, that used to bother me. I then thought about how our perceptions change though. Like when you see an old photograph that you thought looked great and clear in the past but now looks like it was taken with a potato. Maybe we were happier with those whites when we didn’t know how white white could really be? (Or whatever the product is).

 

It probably is that but sometimes the dirt was just so visible on the old version when they showed the new that there's no way it used to be that bad.

I've always wondered what football clubs use because how the hell are they getting those whites spotless and I so much as lok at dirt in a white t-shirt and it needs binning
