It's dreadful to watch. So boring and not going to entice pay on the day fans to come as the weather gets colder. We want to be entertained for the time, effort and cost to go and watch it. We don't have any players who get us on the edge of our seats.
It’s easy with hindsight to say we could see what duff was building. I’m not sure most could at the time. maybe Collins won’t be the one. But he hasn’t looked clueless for me. And he needs time. Some people on here (not saying you) need to relax. There has been some complete reactionary nonsense posted on this thread (Poya/schopp comparisons) people need to get a grip.
Not saying we need a new gaffer (at least not yet) but what we need most of all is to get out of the easiest league one in years this season. Next season will be much tougher with the possibility of at least one of Notts County or Wrexham coming up with momentum of back to back promotions and the likes of Wednesday and Rotherham coming down.
If Collins continues to set us up to play in the way he has so far this season then there will be hardly anyone sitting in the seats
Some proper bedwetters in this thread. If you're comparing Collins to Schopp or Asbaghi you should stop watching football, seriously. I'm not saying he'll get us promoted but he's clearly orders of magnitude better than those chancers.
Gi oer wi thi...this is luxury compared to some of the crap I've watched at Oakwell over the last 50 odd years.
I've seen many a crap performance myself but usually at championship level, mainly because our opponents were too good for us. I expect better at league one level.
Bedwetters. You mean people who have seen us fail to perform before? Nail your post to the mast where are we finishing then? It’s not promotion is it?
Am I going to say we'll definitely get promoted? No. Am I going to say we're definitely not going to get promoted and should sack the manager after 10 games where we're the top scorers in the division despite missing our best midfielder? Absolutely not, because that's mental. It may well turn out to be the case that Collins isn't up to the job, but there's not enough evidence to support that assertion right now. Feel free to quote this post if he turns out to be ****, because I'm entirely comfortable that at this moment in time sacking him would be the wrong decision regardless of how his tenure might transpire from this point.
The crappest things today were the finishing and the officiating. Not sure what the manager can do about that.
You mean the lack of finishing, sorry just being light- hearted pedantic here. I agree with you but just to add I’m not convinced of a front 2 pairing of Cole and McAtee.
This club is just stupid sometimes From Ismael to tippy tappy manager From Duff to tippy tappy manager What clown though that one up !!
Yawn, whatever ‘system’ is played, if your players make rash challenges and concede penalties, if your players fail to have a bit of composure when a decent scoring opportunity arises, and you are not awarded a penalty for at least one ‘ stonewaller’ it’s going to be hard to get a result. Thought we played well 2nd half. I don’t think that. Cole and McAtee are a front 2 pairing but at least he changed it
I think the stat of Liam Roberts making an average of 5.5 saves a game sums up where we are. Collins is out of his depth unfortunately but hasn’t been helped by the clowns higher up. The recruitment in the summer was absolutely shocking. None of the centre halves are good enough and one of our best defenders is well out of position. He also decides not to play Cadden today, who is a league above Dodgson. I honestly can’t believe how complacent we seemed to be replacing two superb defenders and one very good at this level with a two non league players, an out of depth French lad and a last minute swoop from Rotherham.
I think the idea is to draw the opposition on to us and then play into midfield and through the lines. But our defenders aren't courageous enough to pass into midfield and so eventually just punt it long. We've gone long before, notably under Ismael and it worked then because we worked so hard to win the second ball but it's not working now because we don't press like we have done in the past. Kane and Styles must be fed up of showing for the ball and actually getting it perhaps one in ten times. And as they're often closed down they go back to a defender so it becomes one in many more than ten times that there's space to turn and get us going forward, but when that happens that's when we look at our most threatening imo. I think that's Collins' plan but if that is indeed the case he has to be stronger with the back three and tell them stop going long as much and instead look shorter into midfield. IF it is the plan what's worrying me is that I can't see any progress. I'd expect to see some signs of adjustment i.e. a gradual reduction in long balls and increase in shorter but other than passing across the back four I don't see progress elsewhere. It was as bad today (particularly in the first half) as it was at Northampton last week. And I think the crowd was generally quite patient today, in my opinion the murmuring didn't start until 30-35 minutes and by that time it was obvious it just wasn't working. If the plan is to wait for a lapse in concentration (perhaps they might fall asleep watching us play it around at the back) then we might be waiting a long time. In fairness, the second half was better because it was played at a much higher tempo but the first was poor.
Tempo is definitely important. Too many times in the first half we played too slow which allowed them to be back in position. In the second half we were faster which was better. for me though, midfielders like Kane need to take more chances. The amount of times Kane got the ball in space and then decided to pass it back was ridiculous. Basically he passes it back and then (generally) Mccart had to play it long. It’s be better if he tried to progress the ball but felt like he looked for the easy option. in kanes defence, he’s playing Connells position and last season when he looked so good he was further up the pitch.
Your first half a pretty good summary of where the team is IMO. The issue seems to be by eventually going long, our midfield aren’t high enough to apply the higher press so the ball comes back, the defence gets under pressure and repeat. To get the defence more confidence we need some consistency in personnel not just defence but midfield too, which we have lacked. We are also too static off the ball as the style of football is to pull the other team out of shape and then exploit.
