Yes I dont know why anyone is thinking any of this will actually happen Its a Tory promise to the North - or in other words just a lie that hasnt happened yet
It should’ve started from the North and made its way South. The North needed the services way before London did! One of the best alternatives I saw was one line north of Birmingham that came to a junction north of sheffield near Penistone and went East to Manchester or continued north for Leeds. It looked like it followed a similar route to Woodhead. Funnily enough I think that proposal was called Network North!
I don't know why they stopped running the odd Cross Country train through Baghill too. There used to be a train stopped there in the eighties and I regularly see Voyager units rattle through now.
Vaguely remember seeing that route online. Agree with starting up here - but that was never going to happen sadly, was it! The construction costs are what they are to an extent - nothing is cheap. It’s about the future and making sure physical environmentally friendly travelling options are there. Electrified trains offer that by the bucketload.
They did in the 80’s. But works around Selby increased line speeds so after that it was quicker to send them via Doncaster and pick up extra passengers they wouldn’t get via Ponte.
@Freddiel there used to be a York to Manchester Piccadilly and York to Blackpool North via Pontefract, Sheffield and Stockport too. Quite a busy station back in day. Don't know why it ended up as it is now.
They're cancelling HS2 to fund a tax cut next year to try and win votes. And then when it comes round to election time they'll promise assistance for the ordinary person which is both uncharacteristically generous and completely economically unworkable, and point to the existing tax cut as proof of their intention. If they lose as expected then they will use the manifesto promise as a stick to beat Labour with ("look at what we would have done") and if they win they'll just say that they can't fund it due to immigrants/trans people/unions and then rely on having 5 years for the public to forget and for them to open up new fronts in the culture war. It's abhorrent politics but if you're a psychopathic arsehole who only cares about power for power's sake it's an obvious play.
Just travelling to Dordrecht via the excellent Dutch rail network. The only downside was the brexit bonus of an hour and a half to get through passport control at Schiphol.
I touch on work on HS2 sometimes. It’s been privately referred to as the Birmingham line for several years. we knew as soon as it started in the south it would never get completed. interestingly part of Sunak’s leadership campaign was to reinstate the whole thing
Saw a weird film with Paddy off Emmerdale. Think it was called "Eeh bah gum". Also I don't think it helps every time the news crews interview someone in Barnsley they pick out most in bred doilom they can find. No wonder they think we're all inbred sheep ******** with no teeth down south.
The original plan announced in 2014 was for South Yorkshire to be served by a new station at Meadowhall... Barnsley, Doncaster and Rotherham MBC's all supported it as did every S.Yorks MP. Julie Dore in Sheffield however opposed it and spent a lot of cash to undermine the route, and also pulled a few stunts behind the backs of the other leaders in the Sheffield City Region in order to get full High Speed into Sheffield City Centre. Shortly afterwards the true costs started to leak out and Hs2 came under pressure to save money... the first thing to go was the Meadowhall route with it's £1-2b station. Whether you agree with Hs2 or not, if it was going to stop in S.Yorks..Meadowhall was the place, and SCC effectively killed it.
Agree most of it will be shelved , Labour won’t reinstate it if they get in , but the bit going to Euston ( the most expensive bit ) will be built
