Yes protest has never worked… we need to be more like the French. They raise the pension age to 62 and they riot in the streets. Definitely more of this peaceful protest is an absolute right on any functioning democracy
It keeps a matter which isn't being taken seriously enough front and centre, and Starmer dealt with it well. Pretty good all round, I'd say.
Wants a citizens' assembly on the climate emergency, as far as I can tell. Not XR, but certainly XR-adjacent.
Starmer handled it brilliantly with the "protest or power" line. A perfect summation of where the party is now compared to where it was with Corbyn and Momentum gifting a majority to the Tories. The protester also guaranteed Starmer's speech will get more news coverage than if he'd not bothered storming the stage. I agree with the comments regarding security though. Starmer was left standing along with him for an uncomfortable amount of time. If he'd been holding a knife or had planned an attack, we could be referring to a very different news story.
If he'd been holding a knife or planned an attack then I imagine he'd probably have been picked up well in advance. I think it was Buckingham Palace that got infiltrated by a journalist 20 or so years ago, and in response to security concerns they basically said that he got through because they were concentrating on terrorists, not journalists.
Starmer should have launched into "I'm the Leader of the Gang" upon being glittered. Perhaps this is why I'm not his speechwriter.
That’s funny, but if he had done, the desperate Tories would’ve accused him of idolising a convicted child molester, so best he didn’t
I was actually disappointed when I saw glitter trending on Twitter and it wasn't a news story about Gary's death. Usually, it's the reverse situation. You see a name of a legend trending and hope it's anything other than a death announcement.
yeah luckily now Labour are committed to changing absolutely nothing so can have their Murdoch approved turn
Conference today voted to nationalise energy and rail. the shadow energy secretary has already said they won’t do that - don’t wanna upset the corporate backers. the BNPL lenders who have successfully lobbied the tories to ensure they are not scrutinised and made to meet minimum standards are sponsoring conference events. Be interesting to see if they succeed in changing Labours mind too
