Joking aside. Southgate wouldn't have to constantly defend big foot if he didn't pick him. Total wa n k spangel.
Southgate can moan at the fans for booing Henderson all he wants, but they are absolutely entitled to make their feelings known.
It’s quite possible that Southgate will start Henderson against Italy just to be contrary. Yet he almost certainly won’t start Grealish inspite of him being a first choice pick for the best club side in the world. Doesn’t make sense to me.
There are enough old timers like Stones and Walker not to need Henderson in the team for experience/role model reasons. He's not at the standard we need to win the Euros imo.
I genuinely don’t know why any of you watched it. It was a friendly before the most important qualifier so he was always going to pick a reserve side which means a load of players who don’t normally together. It was always going to be a dull watch. Put a box set on or something you’ll get some entertainment out of.
He picked a fringe team - as was the correct thing to do in a friendly. But he still shackled them so much they were frightened to death to play progressively. They were still turgid and negative. Why not let those wanting a shirt have freedom to express themselves? He has to go. It’s not even a question any more. Yet there’s still people defend him saying he got us to a semi and a final despite that fact being more despite him not due to him, and the very clear evidence that despite the depth and quality of the squad getting better and better, the actual performance of the team and the results are getting worse. I’ve asked this before. Which club in English, European and any football would take him on? Who’s banging on the door to get him? Nobody. I don’t think he’d get a job in the premier league, but definitely not at a top six or eight club. He’s not a good coach and his football is terrible. He’s an excellent ambassador and representative. Give him a job for life as the FAs director of footballing operations or something, have all the coaches of all the age groups etc line into him. But get him off the bloody bench before another tournament cycle is wasted.
Southgate has strangled any enjoyment there was out of watching England these past few years. More to the point he’s wasting the best generation of players we’ve had probably ever, and ultimately totally failed in his biggest two games. As a previous poster said, he should be moved upstairs, and let someone give it a proper go. Oh and Henderson should be nowhere near an England shirt, unless he’s shopping in a Saudi Arabian branch of JD Sports
Spot on. His media stuff and his man management/encouragement of players is excellent but the bottom line is the tactics, formation and squad picks. He's poor (not awful) at the footballing side and he doesn't utilise talent . The only question is who would replace him and indeed who would want the job.
Most successful England manager for decades, turned round a team that couldn't be bothered playing for their country, made the country have pride in their national team and you lot would hound him out. Shame on you.
Which talent isn’t Southgate using? Who’s the suggestion for who should replace him? There’s literally 3 international breaks before the Euro’s. How many training sessions is that? 6, 7? What do you think a new manager can do in that time? Do people not realise that top club managers don’t want to manage international sides? All the top managers want to manage club sides. Of course Southgate wouldn’t get a top 6 or 8 club. Managers like Lopuetegi & Emery had to take bottom half gigs. Can someone explain to me when England were exciting to watch? I’ve watched them for over 20 years & this is far better than Keegan, Sven, Capello & Hodgson. Can someone tell me some international sides that are exciting to watch? In my lifetime there’s been Brazil in the 90’s & early 2000’s & the Spanish side who predominantly came from two sides & won it all. International football is crap. At least 80% of games have a heavy favourite & are attack v defence scenarios. It’s always been the case in my lifetime & always will be. Qualifiers against the 2nd best team in the group tend to be tense & cagey affairs as do tournament games. That’s always been the case. Friendlies are crap & are managers experimenting & players not wanting to make mistakes so they get picked again. Again, always been the case. I don’t even particularly like Southgate but I find myself defending him against some of the nonsense wrote on here.
I wouldn't have cared that much about this result, as long as we could get a good result against Italy. But I thought Intl friendlies were meant to be a thing of the past now, with the creation of the so called Nations League matches ?.
England can bring in a manager just for the tournament itself. Emery would be my shout. Keep his job at Villa too.
Yeah right, just like Sven & Capello ehh!! lol. As much as I get peed off at Gareth, he does take us to Qtrs and Semis and even a Final as well.
He's due a fail. Remember Hungary at Mollineaux. That could happen in a tournament way he sets his team's up.
A manager who has world class players in multiple areas of the pitch, who simultaneously has the country’s greatest ever goalscorer in front of some of europes best creative talent. A manager who has depth, so that the first eleven doesn’t pick itself, and who in his early years insisted players were only selected on form and merit based on their performance for their clubs - but who now regularly selects players who barely play for their clubs or who play in a Middle Eastern pub league. A manager whose negative approach has led to losing in the knockout stage of major tournaments in the same way repeatedly. A coach who produces performance after performance of dross, who has, in admittedly only pseudo-competitive games, managed to get England relegated from the top level of the nations league; failing to win a single game and losing twice to a Callum Styles inspired Hungary to an aggregate score of 5-0, and despite the careful negative approach, achieving just one clean sheet in six games. At various points over the last thirty years England have had some great players, but never the strength and depth it has now in my view. We have players scoring for fun and tearing open defences against Europe’s best. Midfield players valued at a kings ransom. Defenders performing brilliantly at the highest level of club football. They turn up for England and look like they’re towing a ball and chain. He is wasting a brilliant opportunity. And “you lot” continue to fawn over him and would have him continue in the job indefinitely. Shame on you.
Terry Venables.....maybe before your time, but good England manager, but not squeaky clean like Southgate, so the suits got rid
Have we ever had 3-5-2 formation for England? Could work, we're overrun with midfielders, just short on defenders which could be a big problem
