Dont think its fair to call it racism at all bud. It happens. Last season and season before that both Chesterfield and Southend (iirc?) had this happen to them, both of their players were white. Its more common than you think. As pointed out above, just incompetence as mentioned above... as per usual!
No doubt some will attempt to label this as such but as is well pointed out by Tyke the Tree Frog it's not uncommon and is just down to an incompetent berk, most worrying is he spoke to one side but not the other. Needs some serious training in conflict resolution this lad...
Check out the paragraphs below, found in the twitter post. They do allude to some form of prejudiced treatment "In real time, it appeared that there had been a case of ‘mistaken identity’. The player shown a ‘second’ yellow card was playing in a similar position to another of our players who had been booked in the first half - both are young black men" "Lewisham Borough CFC is a community club in a diverse part of south east London and we pride ourselves upon being an inclusive club which embraces our entire community. Our committee, fans, playing and coaching staff are a celebration of this diversity and our bench is heavily reflective of the community that we represent." "Staff, players and fans in attendance were left feeling that there was an element of unconscious bias in the way that they game was officiated and the incident managed" "Football should be for everyone and no individual or group should feel that they have been treated differently because of their identity. It is disappointing that this is the way that we have been made to feel, as a community club from a diverse area" "We will be exploring all possible avenues to ensure the issues highlighted are properly addressed. We do this in the hope that incidents like this are not repeated in the future and that no player or coach is subject to unfair treatment because of their identity"
The bit in which I somehow missed quite a few paragraphs of their statement somehow. Specifically the bit where they said it. Erm oops?
Sorry mate, I'm not trying to generate an argument between us. I don't know what happened at this football match, I must make that clear. I do actually work with Lewisham Local Authority. I know the ethnic make-up of their populace. I also know their general... demeanour. Probably not the right word. I know they take things in their stride. If they allude to something being racist, then it was unbelievably racist, because they let almost everything go. I don't know the football club, but I can imagine that they have a similar outlook. Everyone in that borough sees casual racism all the time. If it actually sparks their attention enough to comment on it then it was very real. I don't think they could have been any more explicit about what happened, and I find some of the responses in this thread extremely disappointing. But fully expected.
The article states the referee didn't record who had already been cautioned properly. That to me suggests he sent off a black player because he recalled booking one previously. Whether intentional or not, there's certainly a racial undertone.
