Firstly apologies as I know there are or have been numerous threads on the Bridge but I came up blank using the search function, any news on the date for opening? I remember seeing October mentioned but it looks a good while away yet. On a separate note, I know Eldon Street is currently being done up as part of a grant, when the Dev/Woody’s chippy was demolished there was supposed to be something put up/a public area as a gateway to the Town centre from the interchange, all that’s been done is part of a wall rendered( they are doing the pavement in that area currently), I’d suggest the island with the phone box needs doing away with too for safety reasons.
I was wondering this myself, but resisted posting another thread on it, as I feel I'm becoming a little obsessed. Every week I walk past, and a bit more has been done with regard to the pavement surrounding it, but it can't be long now. I did hear October but can't remember where. On another note when in the planning stages, were we not told the sides of the bridge had to be 6 foot high and not transparent? Turns out that was total crap (Or I got the wrong end of the stick).
In 2019 they applied to have the parapets made of glass and at the height it is now. Not sure what the planning before it was.
I’ve read the new bridge will still be shut for Matchdays, and the road closures will continue - not sure how long for….. I can understand the road outside the bingo being closed - makes sense. But the bridge and other roads should be in full use.
The bridge has been designed specifically FOR football matches. What annoys me is that the council have admitted that they need to address the road situation with regards safely getting people from one side of the road to the other for both Oakwell and the Metrodome yet they've sat on their arses and waited till the bridge is built before doing anything about it. Those alterations should have been done while the bridge was being constructed.
Always had issues with where the end of the bridge is, only thing I can see is shutting exit ramps from going up Harborough Hill and down from Alhambra, sending traffic up side of Gala bingo from Swabusch whatyermacallit way down round B&M causing more gridlock, definitely poorly thought out. The bridge looks mint though the square should get some trade once open
Right at the start, before Jumble Lane had been closed, we were lead to believe that this wouldn't be possible. I'm glad it is though, it looks decent.
That would’ve looked absolutely horrendous and not fair on people living at the bottom of Bala street
They looked into ramps but to meet accessibility standards the ramps would have been ridiculously long making the bridge impossible
