Sorry I`m not clever enough to post a link to this story (but unless I`ve missed this elsewhere) what an achievement that seems to have gone unheralded! She`s won the World Ironman title in Hawai`i. The three stage effort is mind blowing - hope she`s in contention for SPOTY.
Link to her win https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/triathlon/67114996 An Ironman Triathlon is one of a series of long-distance triathlon races organized by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC), consisting of a 2.4-mile (3.9 km) swim, a 112-mile (180.2 km) bicycle ride and a marathon 26.22-mile (42.2 km) run completed in that order, a total of 140.6 miles (226.3 km). It is widely considered one of the most difficult one-day sporting events in the world.[1][2][3]
Over the last 16 years this is an event we've really excelled at - with British women winning 6 times and winning another 12 medals since 2007. And as for SPOTY, Chrissie Wellington wasn't even nominated despite winning the Iron man world title 4 times in 5 years.
As someone who has done half ironman I am completely in awe of anyone who does the full distance And LCB's swimming is frankly astonishing. She qualified for the world champs in just the swimming she is so good!
The numbers seem mad, but it’s all in the training really. Build up the miles in training, get the fuelling strategy right and race day looks after itself. I did mine in 14 hours. Some do it in half that. Others do it 17 hours.
A few years ago I was on a forum with someone training for I think a triple Ironman. It took them something like 48 hours to complete it. I just don't see how its possible.
Well done! I do the half in just under 6 hours and thats plenty for me. Prefer the shorter distances and not sure the body would cope with the training for the full
Yeah there's people that do 'Deccas' and all sorts. You can't train for those distances. Your body gets to a point where it can just carry on. As long as there's fuel in the tank it just keeps going. Loads don't finish those types of events, but it's rarely cardio or conditioning. It's daft things like blisters and sores, that become impossible to manage.
Unfortunately that will be down to operating in a minority sport. The primary consideration is “This award goes to the sportsperson whose sporting actions have most captured the UK public's imagination during 2021.“ To be nominated it needs the public to write in and generate enough to be considered. The achievement is clearly fantastic in their sport but majority of sports fans would not have heard of them due to the lack of coverage the sports are given.
