agreed. It’s also a game that poker players are good at, or should be due the probability aspect as mentioned.

work out “the odds” or the probability of something happening and youve then got a chance of winning

interestingly poker was always classed as a game of chance despite numerous court cases trying to prove it was a game of skill

@John Peachy the doubling die is indeed a gambling tool. Here's how it works. Say I was playing you for a quid. At the beginning of the game, nobody has control of the die and you play as normal. If at some point, one of us - for the sake of this explanation let's say it's me - feels I have a potentially winning advantage, on my turn, before I roll the normal dice I can double the stake to £2. You can then choose to accept the increased stake and the game continues but now worth £2, or concede the game and forfeit your quid original stake.

If you accept, you then have control of the doubling die, so I cannot use it again. Unless you turn the game around and decide you're in a winning position, then on your turn, before you roll, you can double up to £4. I either accept and control of the die passes back to me, or concede and forfeit at £2.

And so it goes on. Hope that makes sense.

Incidentally, gnubg is a free backgammon game/engine for windows and linux, should you be inclined

That's great news, another important victory there for us kaggie/left handers lol.
Ive never played Backgammon, it always looks a bit too confusing.
Does anybody prefer the other board games like Othello, Mastermind, and Chinese Checkers/Draughts. :)

Like most games, and certainly most, if not all, sports, especially football, the way to win is to get the opponent to do what you want them to. Once you have control of your opponent you’re pretty much home and dry.

When I play chess against anyone decent, I tend to take the role of the player being controlled, until they’ve had their fun and put me out of my misery.

My son used to play chess on the iPad when he was about 6 years old. On the easy level. Anyone casually glancing over his shoulder and seeing what he was playing were always gobsmacked. But if they had kept watching they would have seen that every game he ever played ended up with him and the AI player chasing each other’s king around the board with their own king for 20 minutes until he decided he couldn’t win and started again!
