Drinking culture in football is something you will never stop, unless women's football becomes more popular, which who knows, in the future it might.

If I travel by train to the match, I will usually have had 3 pints. The only persons who usually get abuse are the officials. Given the ref ratings given thus far this season, I feel semi absolved for that. I should keep my gob shut at times myself, but I'd never abuse an opposing player, or one of our own team, or be a racist idiot, as I've seen others acting. If i see anyone acting in that way I tap them on the shoulder & politely ask them to refrain.

Yeah but if that were people's intentions (to throw things on the pitch) they could do that already - Coke bottles etc.

I really don't think it would be an issue, particularly in ESL, to let people enjoy a beer during the game.

    can someone explain to me

If they allow it at Bayern Munich and Ajax

    Without issues

Why would it be problem at small town clubs in England

Because people in Germany and Holland tend to be well behaved and don't go out to get absolutely hammered, where as many people in England are not and do.

Go out for a Friday night in England and contrast that with a Friday night in Germany or Holland.

From previous posts, it is. I don't go to many small club games TBH. I'm unsure if it would be a pro, or a con TBH in higher level football over time. Most revenue is driven by TV income & sponsorship, so I see no movement from the powers that be to change this.

It works OK in Rugby League / Union & cricket, but there are historical & cultural issues to Association Football from the 70's to when Gazza cried. Before that Chelsea were getting about 15k at games, as folks would not come, so they may have a point.

You've never been to Germany or Holland presumably? In fact have you been to any other European country?

The attitude to alcohol consumption is entirely different on the continent. Of course there is some drunkenness but not on the industrial scale you see in the UK.

There's a counter argument to that, it goes something like 'No you haven't, stop telling fibs.'

Beer thrown from stands halts another Dutch league clash
    Reuters
    April 23, 20234:28 PM GMT+1Updated 6 months ago

AMSTERDAM, April 23 (Reuters) - Beer thrown from the crowd caused a 15-minute stoppage to the match before PSV Eindhoven secured a 3-0 home win over Ajax Amsterdam in the Dutch league on Sunday in another incident involving objects thrown from the crowd.

A beaker of beer was hurled towards the pitch by a spectator, causing an immediate halt to the game in line with new policies aimed at stamping out bad behaviour in the stands in Dutch football.

A similar incident on Saturday caused the abandonment of the league match between second-from-bottom Groningen and Nijmegen.

But while Saturday’s game was called off after a plastic beaker of beer struck the linesman, Sunday’s match was only halted temporarily because the beer thrown did not land on anyone on the field.

Dutch football has been grappling with abuse from the stands and the throwing of objects. After the Dutch Cup semi-final earlier this month between Ajax and Feyenoord, where a cigarette lighter hurled from the stands in Rotterdam cut the head of Ajax midfielder Davy Klaassen, the football association decided that all matches should be stopped immediately if a player or match official was hit by an object from the crowd.

Two other matches at the weekend were halted because of objects being thrown from the stands. Twente Enschede’s match against NEC was interrupted when a container of beer landed on the pitch immediately after the second goal in Twente’s 4-0 win.

The match between Utrecht and RKC Waalwijk was stopped twice for the same reason, both times after Utrecht goals. City mayor Sharon Dijksma decided the players should go back onto the field after the second incident, which came with two minutes of injury time left to play.

The teams agreed not to continue playing and let RKC goalkeeper Etienne Vaessen stand with his foot on the ball until the final whistle blew.

If the blizzard-like drifts of cocaine had in sections of our stands don't help the atmosphere, a couple of extra Madris certainly won't.

More substances is definitely not the answer to improve matchgoing experience. Quite the opposite.

The biggest cause of no atmosphere for me is the drain on people's happiness being enforced by the whole farce in even getting into oakwell that is followed up by a pre match entertainment/music that has gone massively backwards this season and by the time the game kicks off everyone is just so fed up that they aren't in the mood to sing at all. That is all added to by the feelings of distrust and unhappiness caused by things like the kit fiasco and the awful communication and connection between club and fans that's been allowed to happen.

Club needs to invest a lot of effort in to getting people in a good mood and feeling happy and that isn't necessarily on the pitch, it's off it.

Of course people aren't going to be in a party mood when they've just had to walk halfway round Barnsley to get there or had to arrive earlier than they wanted to to get in a carpark that they know they're going to be locked in after the game. They won't be in the mood to sing if they've just had to sit in a dull stadium listening to dull songs in front of an empty pitch.

Get the pre match right and people will be in the right mood when the game starts. Get it wrong and it's an uphill battle

Also the fact that we are only in the infancy trusting the hierarchy! I’m not fully bought in despite some of the strides made.
    The Horsham debacle hasn’t helped.
Perhaps when or if the “Big News” arrives the mood might lift ( unless it disappears with Khaled).

Actually, you have a point. Even the best comedians and top singers have warm up acts as they know that the atmosphere would be flat otherwise.

I have a friend in the business... he was telling me that the comedian Brian Conley is a complete t**t, he has a habit of getting the warm up acts sacked if they're funnier than he is.

Yep, TV shows have them, everyone. If the club could get people in the mood before kick off it would make a massive difference. For a while last season they put a lot of effort in to doing that but this season they have done absolutely nothing
