One of those should be Russell. Not sure he would get many votes either but he was miles better than Cotter
Kane for me. Unlucky not to score, got a great assist and generally controlled the game. Not sure why he didn’t take the penalty and would assume he’ll take the next one. Although we’ve now had 2 in 2 so Kane will probably have been retired 15 years when we get our next one!
I think he didn’t take the Pen because Cole overrode the plan and didn’t give him the ball. Collins not impressed apparently and rightly so
I could be wrong but kind of looked like that on Tuesday night as well but Kane took it and scored. Devante missing surely means Kane takes the duty back.
On the match day thread I mentioned that Kane isn’t as good as he thinks he is himself. I stand by that. I find him hugely frustrating at times, his over-playing, momentum slowing, unnecessary Cruyff-turning moments. He was still the best player on the park today though, even considering that - and by a distance.
And I asked you how you knew that he thinks he’s better than he is. You were on about getting in his head or something. I would genuinely love to know how you manage to do that!
I said he’s not as good as he is in his own head. He plays in a manner which shows this - tries to do too much and take too many touches, thinking he’s good enough to do what he likes but often not being, resulting in either losing the ball or having to turn back and play backwards. Good players always have an arrogant side and I do think he’s a good player. But he certainly appears to rate himself higher than his ability warrants, in my view anyway.
Not sure what’s hard to grasp. Kane at L1 level has some talent. Quite often he overplays and sends himself and us down blind alleys. Sometimes that impacts his performance sometimes it doesn’t. Nothing wrong with arrogance but generally speaking you have to perform to justify that. Quite often Herbie doesn’t. Today he was the best player in the pitch. He may go another 10-15 games without that being true. It needs to be every 2-3 games to justify his opinion if himself
It’s your view and I need to respect it. I still don’t get the ‘rates himself higher than his ability warrants bit’ though. You do tend to express it in a ‘damning with faint praise’ way. Perhaps you are really meaning that he has confidence in his own ability. To be fair, very few footballers are likely to survive without such confidence. As far as I’m concerned he’s head and shoulders better than anyone we have available to us at the moment.
To be fair you have consistently questioned Kane’s ability (in conjunction with how much you think we paid for him?). And I have consistently questioned your analysis. I guess we will never agree. And that’s fair enough.
