Just watched the highlights. Weird game. 3 fouls that all looked like penalties on first viewing but were all just outside the box and all resulted in red cards. What's even weirder is the atmosphere in the stadium. The fans barely celebrate the goals. I've noticed this before at Bayern. They're constantly making a big noise but it hardly increases when they score. Most people don't even clap. It's odd.
I noticed that. First thing I did after I saw Kane's goal was to check that it was definitely a Bayern home game. Very odd. Must be quite disconcerting for a player used to everyone going completely mental whenever a goal goes in.
There remains of course the possibility that on a different occasion Aylott did indeed score a goal from further out for which there is no video record. If so then JLWBigLil mustn’t have been at that game as he would certainly remember it and the details. Certainly the one I recall Big Trev was situated in a position similar to where Kane was.
Like watching most Premier League teams, barely get out of their seats, thank the lord for Leeds fans breath of fresh air in the Premier League - didn't think I'd ever say that...
Until I saw the video I always thought Big Trev scored from close to halfway, probably because the move started there. But I think the furthest successful strike I've seen at the Well was by Ant Kay, driving through midfield one night match (Plymouth??), when he looked up and lobbed the keeper. I think he was just beyond halfway.
I think John Macdonald scored from his own half at home to Grimsby. A long, long time ago. Biglil will remember.
This is something Ive mentioned before, or rather asked about. So MacDonald did indeed score that long range goal against fellow strugglers Grimsby, in season '86.
I don't think he was. I doubt we'll find footage of this to clarify one way or another. I know where I was stood watching it. It was the season we stood on the terrace, the standing area below our only seating area. West Stand lower as it would be called these days. And I know I was stood in the North side. And I know he was pretty much level with me when he hit it. And I know that was about two thirds of the distance between the goal and the half way line. A hell of a goal. But not in our half or on the half way line or anywhere close. But that's just my memory of it. And very flawed, like everyone else's.
I seem to remember it was about half way between the penalty area and the centre circle. So says the Memory Like A Sieve Man.
Leeds fans are great, no doubt about that. But you're suggesting fans of West Ham/Newcastle/Liverpool/Everton etc don't exist! It's certainly a sad state of affairs to see the atmosphere at some of the 'big' clubs though. Man Utd, Chelsea, Arsenal etc. Although to be fair Arsenal's improved last season.
The best shot (goal) I've seen from distance at Oakwell, and this was also nowhere near the halfway line, but considerably closer to it than other cited examples, was Shotton's against Sunderland, on the day fans in the East Upper were leaving in droves, as the whole stand was shaking like a shi**ing dog and felt like it was going to come down. It wasn't a lob, there was no finesse, he hit it like an Exocet missile, and the freakish wind got behind it too. Astonishing goal.
