Billy Ronson

Do you guys remember him. I loved him as a young boy growing up in barnsley. I didnt realise he had passed away in 2015. I also didnt realise Billy played for a while at Tampa Bay Rowdies where neil collins was previously,

 

Thought he was bang average,could only pass it sideways and back.

 

Cant remember that just liked him as a 10 year old

 

He used to light up the ground for me

Good. steady player. Fell out with Clarkey. (2nd time around).

 

I thought he was ok but suffered from the fact that he came into the team to replace Ray McHale so he was outshone by the likes of Banks and Glav.

 

Ray McHale was probably outshone by Banks and Glav and he acknowledged his limitations at a Supporters Club meeting back in the day when he said it was his job to win the ball in midfield and pass it sideways to Ronnie with the words 'Go and get me my win bonus!'

 

McHale was vastly underrated in that team but as you say looked a bit pedestrian with Glav and Banks along side him, Billy Ronson suffered in the same way.

 

Not afraid to go in where it hurt - decent player

 

Similar kind of player to David Perkins, I would say. Not much of a goal threat, but very busy.

 

What about when he was 11?

 

I was told that he also fell out with Hoylandswaine cricket club after he dug a hole on their pitch so that he could practice his golf chipping! Him and his wife used to drink in the Rose and Crown. They seemed a nice couple.

 

An extremely busy midfielder, who gave everything whilst on the pitch. Unfortunately, as he was brought in to replace McHale, our midfield was weakened with his signing.

 

Not dissimilar to Perkins in stature and style

 

I think that's fair.
