Everything they do from now is an act of desperation, and has been for some time. If they do something morally hideous and borderline racist/xenophobic to satisfy the far right scumbags, they'll continue to erode their traditional middle England base - if they do something to pacify the latter, they'll lose the xenophobes and bigots to Reform. They've utterly shafted themselves (and the country, sadly) and no dozen acts of desperation are going to solve anything for them before the election next year.
I’m shocked he wants anything to do with anyone in there right now. He didn’t exactly have a great reputation after Brexit and his roadrunner impression but i think a lot of people look back on him and may as “at least they weren’t Boris/Truss/Sunak”
You'd be pretty miffed if you were one of the 350 elected Tory MP's deemed not good enough for the role!
Didn't even realise it was possible to do this. Make someone a lord and bang, here a cabinet position. That means almost anyone could end up in government and cabinet without a say from the public.
Yes. We've previously had Prime Ministers (Douglas-Home), Home Secretaries (Carrington) and now a Foreign Secretary (Cameron) appointed from the Lords. And yes, anyone who commands the majority of Parliament can in theory be made Prime Minister - although tradition is that they have to stand in a safe seat as soon as possible. Although as a Lord, Cameron can't be questioned by MPs in the Commons but only at Select Committee or by the Lords. He is now responsible for our positions on Ukraine, Israel, the EU and the US Elections... Johnson had 3 unelected cabinets Ministers - including Frost, Cates and Goldsmith. Mandelson was also unelected as Minister for Trade.
Is this their attempt to placate their more moderate voters who are abandoning the Party during its lurches to the right? It’s quite a statement to appoint someone who left due to Brexit after Johnson’s ‘get it done at any cost’.
I'm waiting to see what concession he throws to the far right nutters to calm them after sacking Braverman.
NEW: The New Conservatives group is reportedly meeting later today to discuss Suella Braverman as Tory leader [@SkyNews] just seen this on x
