Guardiola is under contract till 2025 at city. But his wish is to manage A national side one day. (Maybe a clause in his contract)
There is a possibility it could be England. (Why not.) He knows the best players as well as anyone. Family settled in England. Prospects in the future of highly rated young England players apparantly. (I dont have a clue missen tbh)
I get your pessimism. But stranger things happen.

I honestly doubt Guardiola would work anywhere near as well as everyone is assuming. His way of playing relies on everyone being incredibly well drilled and schooled in their role in the team. You don't get the time needed to implement that with a national team.

People need to stop talking as if international management and club management are the same thing, they're really not.

No one has. but how many managers have started international management with a top ranking country. Before taking on a league club.. you start somewhere.

Imo I believe Guardiola would pick the best team available to him. And not pussyfoot around with has beens. Best tactician around. No favourites. over form. Who do you suggest would be better in the post and why.
I am really struggling to name a manager for England that has ever won a 1st tier english league title. Revie aside. but look how that turned out. ££££££ turned his head. And tbh Cloughie was the public's favourite. He was up against it.

The only ones that spring to mind are Alf Ramsay and Howard Wilkinson. Though Wilkinson's stretching it a bit!

Foreign, top notcher is the way forward if Howe doesn't want it.

My first pick believe it or not would be Arsene Wenger.

In terms of style and play - imo a lot of teams that do go on to win these things don’t always look great anyway. Just organised and get results. Italy never looked special when they won it last time. Just effective.

I'm not particularly impressed with Southgate, but going down the foreign manager route is a hiding to nothing IMHO. As well as Erikson did I still think there was something lacking and a disconnect between him and the fans and even the players, Capello was a disaster.
No foreign manager has ever won a world cup, and only 2 have made the final, George Raynor of England, with Sweden in 1958, and Ernst Happel of Austria, with the Netherlands in 1978. I know records are there to be broken, but its pretty humiliating as a top tier footballing nation if you can't find a decent Englishman for the top job.

England's record against top opposition is woeful.

No it's not, if you read the thread through you'll see that in competitive matches against the top 10 in the world rankings...
We've played France once and lost after Kane's missed Pen.
We've played Belgium four times, lost three, won one.
    Played Netherlands once and lost.
Played Spain twice, one win each.
Played Italy five times, we've won twice, drawn once and Italy won twice.
Played Croatia four times, we've won two, drawn one and lost one.
Played Germany three times, we've won one and drawn two.
Of the other top 10 countries we haven't played Portugal, Argentina or Brazil.

I agree but then again who was the last ‘top’ English Manager for club or country?

So in 3 tournaments we've had:

WC semi - our joint best result since 66
Euros final - best we've ever done
WC quarters - as good as we've done under anyone but Southgate since 1990

And now people are clamouring for him to be sacked based off a couple of dead rubber games. Mental.

Don't be a childish prat Rosco... you said the record was woeful... but the results show that in one game each we've been beaten by France and the Netherlands, Belgium have beaten us over four games.. fair enough, but over two games against Spain we are level, five games against Italy we are level, four games against Croatia we are a win up, and we are a win up on Germany too.
Over multiple games we have proved equal to Spain and Italy and better than Croatia and Germany.... that's not woeful.

But is it enough for so called England fans to be constantly assuming we should be winning every competition we enter?

Should we beat every team all the time?

No, we have no god given right to and our results show that.

But Southgate has put this team within reach of finals at every competition and that's all we can ask really, it's up to the players on the pitch to complete the deal.

We came within a gnats chuff of winning the Euros, only beaten on penalties by Italy.

    That's pretty damn close.

Yeah I'm not sure what some fans want to be honest.
As allegedly 'dull' as the footy might be under Gareth, hes still giving us the best chance of winning trophies right now.
I know in the long run, losing in the Semis or the Final still means we've failed. But compare it to not qualifying or gallantly going out on pens in the first knockout round etc.
To win the group and do the qualifying double over Italy, was very good, and long overdue.

Is Steve McClaren still the last English manager to win a league anywhere? Like 20-odd years ago in Holland...
