Genuinely forgot about that. Seen so many pictures of it on the Old Barnsley Facebook page I must have thought it was still there
The phrase used by BMBC is ‘soft launch’. What does that mean? And yes, my understanding from other groups, is that for now, it will still be closed for Matchdays this season. It will still need temp road closures around the bingo for the amount of folk - but that’s normal for many clubs around the country.
No open to matchday fans because its deemed big enough to cope with influx.and safer than the temporary one
It is designed to - but I believe for the remainder of this season, it will be closed. Reported on other forums by engaged parties. Not fully sure why yet.
I genuinely believe that if that happens there will be so much uproar that they reverse the decision very quickly
Have a look around online. Mainly cycling forums. I believe it’s on Police advice - mainly until they can see how it goes. I’m not 100% on this, and was surprised by it myself, but I ‘believe’ it to be correct last time I checked last month. I don’t think it’s the actual bridge that’s the issue - it’s the bingo side of the road etc. And why else would they say it’s a ‘soft launch’…..
I think you're right but I think the public will rightly kick off if they even dare to implement that The bingo place actually objected to the bridge's design saying it's on the wrong side of the road and the councils official response at the time was no it's not. Both bingo and football foot traffic can use the bridge and then walk back on themselves using the pedestrian crossing back towards the railway and thwn the opposite pedestrian crossing over to gala bingo. I think that's absolutely mental personally but if th e police didn't like that plan they should have objected at the time not after it's built.
I don't think it matters that it's on that side for matchdays, the whole area will be shut off to traffic.
It’s been covered a number of times why the bridge ‘lands’ on that side of the road (not enough council-owned land on the other side, the requirement for a much longer bridge deck, the loss of the bingo car park etc. - all resulting in more cost to build). Whether you agree with it or not, that’s where it goes. I assume the bridge is being opened because it’s already very delayed and the majority of the work is complete. According to the plans there is going to be a new pedestrian crossing on the other side, but that’s obviously not in yet - which could be why the bridge might still be closed on match days. Not that it matters. If the team carry on playing like they are, there’ll be no fans going to watch anyway!
Yes I get why it's on the 'wrong' side but the police knew that when it was approved so it's wrong to enforce restrictions because of it now.
I hope not. The slip roads are vital for match day traffic and it seems bonkers to keep a carpark closed off too. That carpark really should be a park and ride on matchdays
The temporary police restrictions are likely to be because the aforementioned pedestrian crossing hasn’t been installed, or because some other safety measures won’t be ready in time. I don’t think it’s because the police now think the bridge is on the wrong side!
Piss poor planning if so. The bridge has taken half a decade to build so the crossing should have been installed in time
