Very sad news. He was always complimentary as QPR manager towards the Barnsley team of the early eighties.
    R.I.P. Terry.

I hadn't seen this before, but what a photo! Check the 15yo Pep watching on in awe. Venables was the nearest English coach we've ever had to the likes of Guardiola. [IMG]

Absolutely this. The most complete performance I've ever seen by an England team.

Euro 96 was brilliant and he was a huge part of why.

I remember the season he got QPR promoted. 1982/83. He as much as said near the season end. Barnsley were the best team in the 2nd division.
He was right. Apart from the fact we didnt get promoted. But we knew what he meant.
We were one of the best footballing sides in the country (1st division included) never mind 2nd division.
    RIP sir.

It's so beautiful that goal, a work of genius. Never get tired of watching it over. El Tel played his part melding them together to play such football.

R.I.P. Reckon England would have won another tournament by now if he'd have kept on as manager.

Back then could we have gone up and qualified for the Uefa Cup? Were we that good?

We would have survived I believe. Mid table at worst. Any side that tried to out football us would have failed. As much as i liked venables. QPR were negative against us. And he did have the cheek to call out wendy for stifling tactics. A master tactician I suppose.

Yeah Euro '96 ehh, with El Tel in charge, and the players respecting him and running through the proverbial brick wall for him.
Great memories, and for me not just as an England fan, but as a fan in general as well. Football did indeed come 'back home'. :)
And the Fa made a ridiculous mistake not wanting to keep Terry on as manager after the tournament. Think of what he and that squad of players could have built on.

Anyone can post an R.I.P but this is an outpouring of grief shared by a generation. Him and his positive brand of football touched many hearts.

It was nice to see the respect everybody showed today at the Tottenham match. They won the Fa cup in '91 with Tel, if only they could have won the League title ehh.

A very good player, excellent manager and even better man. Gave England one of it's greatest ever summers. He could belt out a tune too.

    RIP El Tel.

Indeed. I remember his saying that our midfield of Glavin, Banks and McHale was the best in the 2nd Division.

We finished 10th in 82/3, with 14 wins, 15 draws and 13 defeats. 81/2, our first season back in the 2nd Division, was our best. We finished 6th then, ahead of Newcastle and Chelsea, amongst others, and missed promotion by just 4 points. That was the season in which we reached the League Cup quarter-final, after beating 3 Division One teams, Swansea, Norwich and Man City, before drawing 0-0 at Anfield against the European champions and then losing the Oakwell replay 3-1. On our day, we were a terrific footballing team then. I remember The Guardian's Patrick Barclay warning Liverpool that "this isn't any ordinary Second Division side".

I wasn't alive in 1966. I'm in my 50s. This is the best England performance I've ever seen. I know where I was for this game, I know who I was with, I know what I drunk that night, I know where I woke up that morning and what I did prior to going to the Westleigh to watch this match, I know the team we played and I know what Van Basten did to us in 1988. I know the name of the Dutch guy who watched this game with us, I know where we went for a curry after the game and I know what I did the next day. We played 4-4-2, with 5 of the front 6 only interested in attacking, with barely a tackle in them: McManaman, Anderton, Gazza, Sheringham and Shearer. It's a nuts formation, but we took apart some of the best players the world has ever seen. Slaughtered them. That goal - Gazza to Sheringham to Shearer - Pandemonium. Amazing times. Thank you Terry.

I saw him playing for Spurs in the late 60s, when I was a student in London. A very talented player, for sure, as well as becoming an excellent manager.
