We are currently away on holiday and tomorrow is my wife's special retirement birthday. We're all geared up for a lovely day, great meal in store for the evening BUT I haven't yet told her that Barnsley are at home and I might want to watch it on IFollow.
Instead of going out for a meal I decided that we'd eat in, so bought a load of chinese things for microwaving. So I bravely made a first move.
    Should I, dare I, ought I ?
Current husbands/ex husbands, current partners/ex partners, current boyfriends/ex boyfriends .... how would you approach this ?
    Females too ... ?

Judging on the previous few matches, go for the meal and enjoy the evening.

There's only one of the "special birthdays". There's plenty more chances to have your day spoiled by watching Barnsley.

Forget the micromeals, tek her out properly and have a wonderful evening.

Sure she won't mind taking two hours out of the 24 in a day to watch a game.

No, she'd have every right be almightily pissed off. Did you suggest a microwave meal rather than going out so you'd have a chance to watch the match? If so, wow.

Err, yes. The thought came to me in a weak moment.
She agreed to it too. The meal that is.
When we got married we travelled up to the Lake District for a couple of days "honeymoon". Whilst in the pub in Hawkshead on our wedding night I kept running off to the toilet to catch up with the scores on the radio .... Barnsley v Plymouth, Dec 2000.
We lost 2-0 so I suppose it served me right.

Honest advice - we're a bit crap at the minute and there are 46 opportunities a season to watch us. Your wife has one retirement birthday. I understand football is important to you - it is to me - but it pales into insignificance compared to a spouse.

Plus if she's not into football it will be incredibly insulting to bin her off for a couple of hours to watch it - imagine if it were the other way round and she binned you off to watch something completely inconsequential on tv like I'm a Celebrity or Corrie.

Not sure where you are away, but book the meal early doors. Ply her with drink and nice food, then when she falls asleep you can watch the second half...

It’s not a big match, it is a big birthday. Sorry BFC my vote is to go out, have a lovely time and keep checking for updates on your phone.

Edit: just seen that you kept nipping off to loo to check last time. Even more of a reason to go out but keep one eye on the score… it’s tradition!

Exactly this. Weddings/Birthdays etc. take place from the first week of June (in case we make the playoffs) and the second week of August. The rest of the year is...."Sorry Luv, football's on..." :):)

We're playing Wycombe. If there's a game to miss - Wycombe away excepted - it's this one.

My husband gets the day off for his birthday. I get mine off too, but that's because it always falls in the Christmas holidays.
