If only we played better than we are, where would we be? To be so far up the table and yet not playing well says a lot about this league.
It doesn't sound much, but the way we're playing right now, that actually feels like a big gap to me. We're a million miles off going on the kind of run that would bridge 8 points on Pompey and Bolton.
True. You have to be an incredible optimist to think that we would play well enough to bridge the gap. However, it goes to show, any improvement in performance could reap a climb nearer to the top.
You'd have to be a mental optimist to think you'd get promoted if bottom of the league at this stage of the season. . Erm
On the strength of last night's resounding win (!) I'll follow up this thread by adding that Sheffield Wednesday are further away from safety than we are from top spot. Always a golden nugget isn't there.
Correct. Nobody can get promoted when they're bottom of the League on 28th November. Wait, hang on a minute... https://www.11v11.com/league-tables/league-one/28-november-2015/
I'm old enough to remember Portsmouth letting in 4 at home.. last Saturday. We can improve - and Allah knows we aren't playing at our best - and other teams are currently getting results well above their potential. Oxford are currently on a bad run. They might continue to fall away. They might recover...
We haven’t been playing great, but we’re picking the points up still. Hopefully performances will start to improve - as they have been boring to watch recently. From a neutral’s POV, we’re 7th in the league, with a very good GD. We’ve a good squad, but with a new back 4. A few tweaks in Jan are required. Whilst being in the top 3 would be better, sitting in 7th only a few points behind can set a good mentality in January - being the hunter, not the hunted. It’s all to play for - currently, it’s about results. If we can get a bit more consistency in results, then I’ll take the less exciting football for now, as we really do need to get promoted this season, before a few more players leave again and we go through a rebuild.
The football was turgid in the last two games. Our better players seem either off form, or cannot be arsed TBH. Styles for me, is not vaguely interested. I agree with you about our league position to some extent, but we have slipped & I see little in the way of momentum at this point. We look rudderless & totally off form.
Agree. We have been shocking. Most teams have a dip in form at some point - hopefully this is ours. Regardless - we’re still in a great position and picking up points. Wycombe are usually a tough team to beat. We’ve not won at Lincoln for years. But yet we’ve taken 4 points from them 2 games. I do think Collins is still learning, but I think generally he approaches games as to not concede, maintain possession and then grab a couple on the break. It’s more conservative compared to last year - but then again it has to be to an extent - we’ve lost the entire back 4 (whom were strolling it last season). So he has to take it steady.
I think Neil is clearly trying, and obviously he wants a successful season for the club and us fans etc. It is frustrating however to keep saying he's still learning, and still making mistakes because of it, as we're now into the December part of the season. But with the hand he was dealt though, I think its going better for us in the league than maybe it should have. And the aim is still the same, which is the top 6 and another crack at the Play offs. And we are still in with a very good chance of doing that.
I've just looked back where we were after 18 games last season and in 18/19. We're 1 point better off than last season and only 4 worse off than the promotion season. Just think where we'd be if we would have had a go.
