Went into town today and you could tell M&S had closed it was very quiet There’s going to be a lot of disgruntled traders.

They don't care about their customers, plenty won't be able to get to the retail park.

Chesterfield, Hull, Huddersfield, Rotherham, Bolton, and god knows how many more towns and cities have lost their town centre M&S. They’ve got plans to close many more. It’s not unique to Barnsley. This is their strategy and is paying off for them financially. Yes it’s sad the town centre store has gone after all these years, yes it’s strange without it, but there’s not much that can be done.

Oh, I also bumped a years old thread to discuss the new store yesterday to avoid creating a new one, but I guess that was a waste of time ;)

We definitely need to reimagine some of the town centre and create living spaces.

Time we had a community bus service so the elderly can get to and from the store from the bus station.

Been this morning. A cracking shop, and much more convenient than the old one for those going by car.

Being probably the least busiest day of the week alongside Monday. doesn't help for town centre shopping I'd have thought.

And let's be honest. For those that want a bigger shop. (Not saying big trolley supermarket types) It'll help not carting stuff round.
I do think it's a loss being a prominent store. Hopefully someone will take up the premises.

Great shout for the retail park generally.

They'd a very similar-sized store in Rotherham which was closed over 10 years ago in favour of a bigger store at Parkgate Retail World. I've no doubt competition and the costs associated with town centre shops contribute to make such outlets unviable.

Didn't work out for parkgate in the long run. Maybe they should have made it a food outlet only, like Barnsley and Cortonwood, might have worked.
