Were non league, ground capacity 11,500, similar population to us. Why are they in the premiership with three of our best players?
How come Bradford who were in Premier League with a population much larger than us are in league 2? Come good for Luton at the minute but like many of these short term success stories it doesn't tend to last very long - be nice if it lasts but they'll probably go down this season - live off the money for a few years then probably hang around championship for a few years
Recruitment and ambition. When they finished in the play off spots and got knocked out at the semi finals, they kept their manager through the summer window and recruited players such as Morris to add to a squad that wasn't sold off to the highest bidders, so they had continuity going into the new season and momentum to get up there and get promotion the season after. When we got knocked out of the semis, we lost our manager who was replaced with *****, we lost Mowatt, Sollbauer, Chaplin and brought in the two useless Belgian lumps, Josh Benson among other bad signings. We didn't kick on from our play off defeat, they did.
Ambition is no good now without funds to back it up - they neither have funds or fanbase to keep this up unfortunately
The one thing i thought Luton had that we didi’t/dont was a long term plan, which involved gradual promotion, new stadium and stability with a clear road map how and when to get there. They shared this vision and roadmap with the fans. The recent successes weren’t part of this plan but are a nice bonus which helps them get there a little quicker as long as they keep to the plan.
I wouldn't get carried away with the new stadium... although I agree Kenilworth Road is too small, the new one will have less capacity than Oakwell.
Ahh, there it is again, that word ambition. For all the faults the club has, I haven't heard a single board member come out and say that they don't want to play at the highest level possible. Every time we miss out on a transfer target, or another club has the tiniest iota of success, it's always said that Barnsley has no ambition. Poor decisions have been made, especially after the season we finished 5th in the Championship, but every poor decision made was probably done in the best interest of the club, with the AMBITION of taking us to the next level. It didn't work, not because we didn't want it to, but because sometimes, it just doesn't work. It's a word that's overused, and often used incorrectly.
I believe I've put in my post well enough why I thought we weren't ambitious enough that season, signing Oulare and Iseka can't have been for the best interest of the club surely? Yet you seem to have pulled my post down again like you do many times in the past, is there something personal you have against me?
Simple Back a few years ago we would only sign anyone in nappies. Luton signed experienced and decent players. And gradually built year on year. That's it
I think they were signed because Paul Conway thought they'd improve the squad. They didn't of course, but I wouldn't say that's a lack of ambition. I apologise if I've disagreed with a number of your posts in the past. I have a tendency to reply more to people I disagree with rather than with people I share the same view as. But I guess that's the purpose of this forum, to have a debate. It would be boring if we all felt the same way. I promise you, it's nothing personal, and I don't think I've made a criticism of you personally in any of my posts. Again, I apologise if I have or if it has come across that way.
Hard to disagree with this. in the abstract of course our board would claim they have ambition. The reality is that they don’t. Every decision is money related and the idea of sporting success comes second.
Thats what angers me about them as well, amongst other things, their appalling lack of ambition. I was amazed when we signed Norwood, because their usual ridiculous policy was to only sign kids with the potential sell on profit. And to verbally dismiss our Play off season as being a failure, because it didn't bring in the expected money from player sales. That was unforgivable and it sums them up to be honest!.
There’s a difference between saying what you would like to do and carrying it out. We talked about a plan of replacing players sold on for profit with replacements - the bit we didn’t mention is that we would do it in such a haphazard way that we leave the team chronically short and having to play catch up time after time hence why we never hang on to players or coaches.
Ref the play off season. Apparently not. Would we have sold the centre halves for 7/8 million if we had been getting spanked every week in the championship? I think we maximise sales in L1.
or that we would end up with 8 centre halves. All being paid with only 1 maybe 2 being good enough even for L1.
Doesn’t last forever - Sheff Utd made a massive loss. They lost 50 million in TV rights that halves that - loss in turnover from 115 million to 67 million - those losses with players on bigger wages eat away at that straight away. Small crowds aren't going to bring much in - clubs like Liverpool etc make hundreds of millions from overseas fans. Tourists to Anfield pay in average 800 pound per game - Can't see many travelling over to Luton Besides that 100 million is paid over three years not in one lump sum
