Punches referee to the ground https://www.theguardian.com/footbal...punches-referee-after-turkish-super-lig-match Surely nothing less than a lifetime ban? He really should be in a prison cell tonight.
Not condoning it but there needs to be some accountability for match officials. This stuff is happening because owners, fans, players etc want vigilante justice due to referee's being seemingly untouchable. Until referee's are punished properly for having a mare this stuff will get more prevalent in the game. It's assault and the perpetrators need arresting and justice needs to prevail. However, the route cause needs attention. Var and poor match officials are ruining the game at a number of levels.
Couldn't disagree with you more strongly on this one, Mr D.! Referees do an impossible job. They cannot hope to be as fit and as fast as the lavishly paid athletes who play the modern game. They have a view which can't be as good as spectators, elevated on the terraces, or from the myriad TV cameras that attend any remotely significant game these days. It is high time we returned to the ethos of "the referees decision is final". Referees are not biased or corrupt. They do not favour one team against the other. What they are is fallible. But in the spirit of sportsmanship we should respect what they do and abide by their decisions. VAR has solved nothing because those who moan and whinge about on-field decisions now dispute VAR calls, which still involve an element of subjectiveness. As was hinted at after tonight's disgraceful incident, the game is not a war. People are not getting killed (with one or two crazy exceptions in the last few decades). The game would improve massively if we could return to an ethos of respect, and an intelligent overview regarding the impossibility of the referees' task.
Strongly disagree with this. A ref is trying to officiate a game, whilst 22 players, coaches, coaching staff and subs all desperately cheat for 90 minutes. Then when someone dives they're called clever for "initiating contact" or "have every right to go down". Every player appeals for throw ins and corners that they know are not theirs. Every play pulls shirts, grabs and holds at set pieces then refs are pulled apart by pundits because "if you give that, then you have to give 10 penalties a game". Fine, give 10 a game if it stops cheating. If VAR was used to stop cheating and bans were given out after games, then referring would be a whole lot easier. CAVEAT: Some refs do act like cap ends though. Although Mike Dean has now retired.
Understand what you’re trying to say but also have to disagree. For me the issue sits somewhere within society in Turkey, it seems to be perfectly acceptable for aggression & ‘passion’ when it comes to Turkish football. Just look at how the press big up things like welcome to hell etc when a team goes to Turkey, they may not actively encourage it but they certainly don’t criticise it. According to BBC he was also hit by others whilst on the ground as well, that’s not passion that’s just violent. On a similar note I notice Greece have just banned all supporters for 2 months due to fan violence.
This. At least when these did complain it was done with an understanding the ref is human and fallable all VAR has done is removed that.
VAR should just be for goal line technology. Its binary - a yes/no, like in cricket or tennis. When blokes are watching TV to try to determine levels of contact, then its a shambles.
If every time someone made an honest mistake at work they got punched in the face, there would be millions of people walking around all the time looking like pandas.
firstly not only should this idiot get 5 yrs in a Turkish prison the ones who followed in should join him. Back to Ref's anyone who was at the Burton away game where the player punched the ball round the post while the ref with an unhindered view 5 yards away gave play on may disagree about Referee's not being biased or having pre conceived ideas before the game starts. I for one wouldn't touch it and never did when asked to ref when my lad played. All correct about the cheating but lines person's don't help when they constantly look to the ref for decisions they should be making. sadly there's no way back, VAR has added to the issue and if ya want to get to the real issue go and watch a local kids league game and stand near the coaches of both sides, Premier league in miniature am afraid...
Wasn't aware of the Ban on spectators in Greece. I'm not so sure it will prevent the Hooligan element from still being dickheads. But I also don't know the answer to it. Ban away fans completely but they'll still roll up for a ruckus. (And punishes the innocent)
The problem that the referees have is that they interpret how to apply the rules. They ask for respect, we get told that players surrounding a referee is a bookable offence, but they then don't book players who surround them and act all shocked when players surround them. If they applied the laws as they stand, they'd probably get a lot more respect and we'd see less of the blatant cheating.
Nobody deserves punching for doing their job - except boxers and MMA artists. I was more thinking about the constant cheating that players get away with. If you give players an inch, they'll be 20 miles up the M1 before you blink...
Referees do an extremely difficult job and deserve support not twa.tting. As has been indicated they are fallible, isolated and pretty much lonely on that pitch so the support should be in regular reviews of referee performance by an independent panel which has the right to promote, demote, reward or censure if needs be. Refs decisions on the day though should be final even if fans dont like it. Violence is in no way Justifiable and has potential to get worse if not dealt with. Perpetrators should be punished. Ref should be supported and compensated.
Violence against match officials is disgusting and those found guilty should never be allowed inside a football ground again, and that’s before the Courts/ law do their bit. No official should be banned or castigated just for having a ‘mare’ However, there does need to be proper accountability so that the consistent poor match official (and their are plenty)can be weeded out or change fir the better perhaps. I have said many times on here and will continue to do so, that when match officials treat/punish players/ teams differently for similar offences then it is nothing short of cheating. Also, I still can’t believe that the ‘crowding’ of referees by players is still commonplace and made even worse in the PL as they await the outcome of a VAR decision.
As on Saturday T. Cotter was pushed over by the corner flag in front of us and in clear view of the linesman. (Having then looked to the ref) Think we were 3-1 up at the time.(may have been 2-1) and he must have felt sorry for Reading. Cos we'd have run the clock down a little.
