Sunak is meeting with the hard-right halfwits this morning. Thing is, he can't offer them anything more because the 100+ 'One Nation' MP's will then oppose his bill. The only play I can see is that he threatens the breakfast club with an early election if they sink his bill tonight. For Sunak or either of the factions, passing the bill tonight only postpones the same dilemma until early in the New Year at committee stage and third reading. Might be an interesting day!
Right wing: Too soft. Left wing: Too hard. He has realised now regardless of what he decided, he was never going to please all his party.
It was a fairly impressive list, to be fair. https://x.com/nathan_oswin/status/1734189700813132273?s=20
I believe him when he says he can’t remember because things of no consequence to you , you tend to forget , people dieing things like that
Miriam Cates MP for Penistone and Stocksbridge CO- FOUNDER of the Right wing Conservatives. Attended/Attending. Frightened of losing her seat next election me thinks.
There are two alternatives here - either he's got an incredibly unreliable memory to the point where it suggests cognitive issues or he's lied under oath. Either option should exclude him from being PM. He should be hounded out for this, but he won't because nobody cares about honesty in politics anymore.
He won't care about anyone dying. I bet he could tell you the value of every share he owned on any particular day though.
But all the right wing of the Tories are thinking about the next election. | They need to be rock hard anti-immigrant if they are going to run on the "Reform" Party ticket and so they have to vote this down to prove it.
They are scared $hitl€$$ that he will call an election if they vote against this abomination of a policy. In all seriousness, I hope he does lose the vote and they put in a no confidence motion, which will hopefully see him call an election and wipe these $hite hawks out of office.
I think they will be too scared to go into an election now & be wiped out in the Red Wall seats & many others down south to the Lib Dems, who are more the One Nation group. My feeling is Sunak will say he's going to redraft the bill again, to buy more time. That does not need to happen at first reading, but will be implicit in it passing later. "The Tories are Falling Apart Again". I'm not that excited by Starmer as a leader, but it is a far more palatable alternative, if if Labour don't water down their policies too much, there are some good ideas for modernising our economy. Taking some seats in Scotland will be key also too, to limit any nationalist demands for a referendum any time soon.
No matter who's in power the immigration issue needs sorting people crossing on boats or trafficked. Read today about 2 Albanians who entered illegally found with 10k cash and 50k in cocaine in wakefeid both jailed and to be sent back after. But they have been promising to sort immigration for every election since as long back as I can remember.
System used to work reasonably until Torys withdrew funding from Local Authorities and all the Asylum teams were cut
You open a processing centre in France that the French have offered to part fund. the £290 million they have spent on Rwanda so far could have processed 400000 asylum claims.
