Liverpool had played Real Madrid the week before and Bob Paisley said Barnsley gave them more problems than Madrid.A very worthy and deserved compliment. We actually should have won at Anfield that night but we've made up for that ever since.
Because I was there. Liverpool V Barnsley League Cup Quarter Final 1982. I have seen some footage before.
Got to agree that that’s best support we’ve ever took, we may have took more to Wembley a couple of times, but that is to be expected as with any semi final/playoff etc. Maybe 18000 there on a Shiite night in December......was a lot of trouble that night too with scousers ambushing the early coaches that got to ground, majority of reds fans didn’t get there whilst midway through first half because stuck in traffic.....was a great time to be Barnsley fan in that period
So was I, but not till half time. But that clip doesn't say which match it is and it is so poor it is hard to see what it is.
Stuff of legend that night 14yrs old me with my late dad stood singing our hearts out memories can't beat them.
Probably outnumbered em as well Bazza based on attendance and estimated Barnsley fans. Circa 15-17k. I missed the first 20 minutes. But as you say. Best experience as a fan and atmosphere ever. Will live in the memory forever. For many reasons. Fog. Performance. Result. Atmosphere. Violence.
We were walking up thru the car park just after half time when a huge roar went up obviously thinking Liverpool had scored but it turned out Trevor Aylott had hit the crossbar, I think, anyhow after seeing the Scouse scum chasing Barnsley fans young some very young, and old with Stanley knives I have detested Liverpool the city and the people who live there ever since
Certainly. their reputation wasn't exactly upheld as decent fans at the time. Although none of the two hats went to the game. And some did get their comeuppance according to the stories the next day. Allus said/say, "trouble wherever there are dockers". Certainly in that era. Liverpool Grimsby Hull Millwall West ham Pompey. All among the worst.
What a night. Eventually got in the ground about 5 minutes before half time after a nightmare journey through the fog. Plus after dodging a few threats from scouse scallies in the streets around the ground. What a performance and what an atmosphere. Seems a long, long time ago now….which it is lol.
I experienced some of the best moments of watching football that night. Equally that night some of the worst I have witnessed ,I don't want to go into this ,but let's say some of lads from the Tarn gave as good back minus Stanley knives. Not nice to talk about . But a very proud night for most of the Barnsley fans that night.
