ECJ ruling just went massively in ESLs favour. Here we go. The beginning of the end. Although some may argue that actually started a long time ago. Got LIV/PGA all over it. All these Clubs bairning about number of games. Let’s cut it down to 12 a year, in a closed league, for a squillion quid. Perfect!
Hopefully this will spell the end for FIFA/UEFA. The format changes to the Champions' League next season are really going to put people off the competition as it is.
The response now has to be what should have happened when the PL idea was first floated. Cut the clubs that want to join the ESL adrift from the domestic leagues and tighten up ownership rules to prevent ESL clubs owning clubs in our domestic leagues. If Manchester United, for example think a midtable clash with AC Milan will be more attractive than a domestic derby game to their core support it might be a tough lesson to them especially if the way back in to the EFL starts way below the National League. Let's see them fill out Old Trafford with a game against Stocksbridge Park Steels.
The new elite in this country will be. Everton, West Ham, Aston Villa, Brighton, Wolves and Nottingham Forest.
Bring the ESL on. Sooner the better for me. More level playing field for the rest, what's not to like?
The choice isn't between Domestic/ESL though, it's between Champions' League/ESL. I've not seen any mention of the clubs leaving their domestic leagues, they just won't play in the UEFA sanctioned European tournament.
I realise that. It's all about greed, they'll want out of the League Cup or FA Cup citing fixture congestion. Their greed is killing the domestic game. The EFL get scraps from their table in return for the EFL Trophy having to accommodate the Greed League's U21 teams when the clue about the competition's intent is in the name, it's the EFL Trophy.
Whilst I detest Fifa/Uefa, the game is safer in their hands than the Glazer's or the owners of Real Madrid.
The Glazers will no doubt cite North American sporting competitions, with their vast distances travelled, as a template for what the ESL could become. European competitions have, with the exception of the European Cup (and it's successors) and the Intercity Fairs Cup (ditto as per European Cup), been organised domestically, the equivalent of a State in the USA. The problem with the North American template, with no promotion or relegation, the vast majority of games become meaningless and then you also have to factor in the franchise model which means owners can decide they no longer want to be based in a particular city because they have a better offer from another city.
They will be kicked out so it won’t be an option to be in both. The newly appointed regulator will have a big part to play.
Don't stand for any ******** or blackmail, let everybody who wants to go , go, just make them outcasts as far as legally possible no pandering! I
Easier said than done. We saw what happened with golf. PGA tried this approach, but quickly realised LIV and Norman didn't give a fk. Once PGA realised they just couldn't hold onto their marquee players, they folded and went for a slice of the blood money. You see what's happening in FIFA too. Wenger was one of the biggest whiners in the game, about fixture pile ups and winter breaks. Now here he is, expanding the Club World Cup 'for the good of the world game'. My guess is PL will quickly become a 2nd tier, and I suspect the FL pyramid will get even less £ than they do now. In a way I'm not massively opposed. Maybe the PL will become a fairer playing field, and something than more teams can actually realistically achieve?
The problem for me is the Premier League will have lost that allure. I watch Barnsley because I dream that one day we'll be playing at Old Trafford and Anfield on a regular basis. Without that football is nothing for me.
Interesting innit. I know there's almost zero prospect of us ever competing at that level. Not in my lifetime anyway. The closer reality for me, if we did somehow manage to scramble our way there, would be watching us get hammered week in week out, whilst contending with fans' completely unrealistic expectations of survival. Do I really want to see that? I don't think I do. Obviously I'd want to go on the journey that got us there...but I don't think it would be pretty if we did.
Driven by pure greed and 2 horrible clubs at the epicentre Real Madrid and Barcelona, Barcelona in particular who's financial mismanagement has seen them sell off the next 20 years tv rights
