I see a post saying the bridge is open and we all know what that means. I'm driving into town to have a go. Slightly disappointed that it isn't lit up now that it's open so hopefully that's because they're doing something not because there's a problem but it's so much better being able to walk over a modern fit for purpose bridge than that rickety old thing. The market gate carpark was much busier than I've seen it for a few years now and the town itself looks really busy and not with drunks. With people relaxing and enjoying themselves. Love it Also this looks a promising sign regarding it being open on matchdays... Barriers along the edge of the road at the Oakwell side of the bridge and signage directing people to Oakwell.
I am looking forward to using it tomorrow. (I appreciate how sad that makes me sound). Has the 5? year old temporary bridge been removed and has all the paving around the bridge been done?
Yep i've just left the centre and the tipi is rammed, salt house is rammed, tgi Fridays is full, literally every table from what I could see, nandos is almost full, botanist looks full, falco lounge had every table downstairs full and some up and the bar in the market kitchen looked fairly full through the window too. I've always been proud to be from Barnsley but I can honestly say I've never been more proud to tell people I work with that Barnsley is the place to be right now. If you want somewhere to go for a meal, a drink, or to watch a movie then there's nowhere else in South Yorkshire that I'd be going to. Much nicer environment than meadowhall and to be honest I can't wait for the summer. That town square, accessed by a modern safe bridge will be absolutely booming in the warm weather. Just needs the bar next to the salt house opening and the unit that was going to be boom bar filling, ideally with a gym which was the original plan. That would get people in on an evening and maybe then the shopper's will come and traders will have confidence to take units in the glassworks and the Alhambra. If tonytyke is sad for looking forward to using the bridge tomorrow then how sad am I. Made a special trip just to use the bridge and take some photos of it. And you know what? I don't care. I ******* love Barnsley I do
Only dawned on us today that we've been to Meadowhall once since Covid, that place used to be our main shopping go to, especially at Christmas. Now we can walk and within 15 mins get everything.
Ok I've finished my little trip into tarn now. Did a bit of shopping in Morrisons and when I was leaving I thought I could see white light near the top of the bridge. Of course I had to fly round to the market gate carpark to check it out anddddd....
