Conceding First This season we've earned 9 points when conceding first compared to just 2 for all of last season. Scoring First This season we've given up 11 possible points after scoring first compared to just 3 for the whole of last season.
Says it all. Sort one problem and create another. It's also glaringly obvious which position needs addressing.
Sure, although it's noticeable which stat gets the most traction. I read Darren Ferguson saying that he'd watched us and felt we were set up to suit away games more than home ones, which is reflected in the stats. So I'd suggest the problem isn't with players, but tactics when conceding first. Home Played 12 For 23 Against 15 Points 18 Points given away after scoring first 7 Away Played 12 For 23 Against 13 Points 25 Points given away after scoring first 4
Bit of both in reality I suspect. Away there tends to be a bit more space to attack so tactics play a part but players still have to have ability. At home less space as opposition plays tighter, if your players don’t have ability to unpick.
Interesting stats as despite all the complaints about style of football it suggests we play more attacking football but can’t defend. Which then lends to the theory if you can play the same way with better defensive abilities you will win more. Or we take the Kevin Keegan approach of we will score more and attack more….
Most teams who come to Oakwell put everyone behind the ball and rely on the counter attack. Wigan being a prime example with all 11 behind the ball at times. We're so slow that we struggle to unpick teams at times. Away from home the onus is on the home team which gives us more space to attack.
The increase in points dropped when ahead is purely down to the defensive frailties. We're vulnerable even when playing well, as shown at Peterborough.
