Age old problem of quality over quantity. I don't think anyone is saying we need more players. Just better ones. Unfortunately a Club like ours has to take punts on players, which leaves us open to ending up with too much dead wood. Despite saying we're 'data-led', so is everyone else in football now. I doubt it's giving us much of a competitive advantage these days. Take Watters, Dallas & Shaw for example. That money would have been massively better spent IMO, keeping Norwood for another season. I'm confident that Bobby will start sorting this out, but it's gonna take time.
We've bought plenty of cheap ones that have gone on and made us a few bob as well. Paid a million plus for Benson - that has worked out well - our all time record signing hardly pulled up any trees Modern teams need at least two players foe every position - also need a decent youth setup because every now and again we get a gem.
Watched the Salford documentary on sky the other night and they passed on the chance to sign Dallas after an actual scout watched him
In the clubs defence, especially after the full medical, they're weren't to know he'd be struggling with constant injury issues. I do agree with you though in general, biggest one springs to mind being McGheehan!
I’ve never seen Benson look effective in the team - sure some neat passing around but often without it going anywhere at all - he gives it away as much as anyone else in midfield. I was thinking the same that we’ll never recover the money we’ve spent on him and he just goes on and on taking a wage for nothing in return. Every time he’s brought on as a sub it seems to make the team overall even less effective. Sadly (as I’m sure he’s a decent lad) we have to move him on and use those wages better.
I still think Leya Iseka would still be the best striker we have if involved, for some reason the secrecy surrounding him was just bizarre. If it was a contract/appearance issue then why not just say that?
A few reasons. He knows the EFL as well as anyone, which is absolutely critical in terms of knowing what types of players you need. He knows the Club inside out, at every level. He's part of the Community and has been for about 20 years. He's as committed to Barnsley Football Club as anyone in my lifetime. He also knows the industry academically speaking, with a Master's under his belt. Hey may do well, he may not. But in terms of CV I can't imagine there's a person on the planet right now, willing to come to Barnsley on Barnsley money, that is better equipped.
I’d imagine one of biggest benefits of having him do the role is his actual knowledge of U23/Academy players should be excellent, so when the data throws one up he should be able to either cast an opinion on them or speak with people who can.
Bobby explained last week how our recruitment works and whos involved. The coach, the recruitment team,Bobby himself, the acting ceo and the board.
The reference point I use for my "Comings & Goings" update is https://www.barnsleyfc.co.uk/teams/first-team/. During our short cup runs, and sometimes randomly, silhouettes of other U18 and U21 players appear, but soon slink back to their original level. It's not 100% accurate, but it's the best I have. This currently shows 27 players (2G, 11D, 7M & 7F). Jalo is still shown as in the U21s, even though he's a First Team regular, which is why he wasn't included in my latest updates.
The issue with him was he’d never had a full season playing men’s football. When we signed Scowen, Hourihane, Winnall, Roberts etc they’d got a proven track record of been able to cope with the physical demands of playing 90 mins twice a week. It’s a huge punt for a club like ours to pay good money for a kid who’s only played 17 competitive games of football before we signed him.
Agree. He showed a bit of quality early on last season with a couple of long rangers but he can’t stay fit long enough to establish himself & he’s probably not got the match fitness to impress when he does come off the bench.
I think selling some of the 991614 centre halves we have and buying some that can run and defend would be a good start.
If we got shut of about a dozen and replaced with about half a dozen, we would be in a better place squad size.
