Well done Jordan, well deserved. Goes to show our academy has done alright in recent years. Also that we should never have let him go.
On the same day that Jordan Helliwell signs for Wakefield. For every academy success, there's several failures.
Give over, he's 30, we let him go 10 years ago. Left us and went to Chesterfield, Scunny, Hyde, Shrewsbury, Accrington Stanley and then Luton when they were in L1. He's done amazing to be where he is, but you can hardly claim he's had a high flying, glittering career since we let him go and that's some fault of ours.
He's playing in the Premier League. None of our players are. Luton would've binned him off if he wasn't good enough for a side challenging for promotion from the Championship.
Never said he wasn't good enough, he obviously is. My point was you can't blame the club for letting him go, when it's took him 10 years to come good, how many players in recent years have done 10 years with us. His days after us were spent in L2 and none league, whilst we were in the Championship, he'd have been hounded out as not good enough, had he stayed with us.
I wasn't trying to blame the club but actually praise the Academy for producing players who go on to have solid careers. Plus of course mainly praise Jordan for doing what he has!
No he didnt. We released him and he ended up at Shrewsbury. The previous 3 we sent him out on loan. About 5 months in total for all 3. I genuinely thought he was worth hanging on to. He did more than ok on his few showings for us imo. I took particular notice as he was a local lad. He was in amongst a half decent squad who got relegated the same season and became surplus to requirements. Others coming through like Noble Lazarus. And those coming in. like Hourianne. The following season. Several of us among our group commented at the time that he was one to persevere with. And were shocked when he was released. At the tender age of 20.
Delighted for him. I don’t think he was ready for it at 20. I was stood at the side of him in a shop recently & he really is tiny. He’s obviously a player that is peaking later. How many years can a club like ours keep a talented footballer on the books hoping that he would come good? He didn’t look a top league one player at Shrewsbury & they released him. He didn’t really start delivering at Accrington until his third season with them. So it took 4 years for him to start showing any kind of potential beyond league one. And if we did have kept him for them 4 years he probably wouldn’t have got the game time needed to develop into the player he is now.
Exactly this, mate. Look at Chelsea - got rid of both De Bruyne & Salah and now look at them. 2 of the best players in the premier league. Happens at all clubs.
Never played non league after leaving us. 3 seasons in league 2. (Promoted in 2 of em) 3 in league 1. 2011–2014 Barnsley 6 (0) 2013 → Chesterfield (loan) 2 (0) 2013 → Scunthorpe United (loan) 1 (0) 2014 → Hyde (loan) 16 (1) 2014–2016 Shrewsbury Town 47 (5) 2016–2020 Accrington Stanley 162 (20) 2020– Luton Town 103 (5)
He was on loan from us at Hyde towards the end of the 2013/14 season. We then released him at the end of that season and he then was taken on by Shrewsbury. Start of 2014/15 season
Just putting fact afore fiction. By putting you right on a few errors. Most mistakes of the day award. Coming your way.
Was a couple of years above him at Kirk Balk. Could always see he was a step above others but didn’t think he’d become a premier league player one day so well done to him. I always thought he didn’t get too much of a chance but at that time we were a championship club and he was league 1/2 standard. Then as we dropped, he rose.
