I'm guessing you know you can patent an idea. Without a prototype. Then would be the time to approach an engineering co with a design engineer. Probably stuff on the market to provide the locking mechanism. There is lots of helpful information on the net. Eg. Free guides. Can't see why you'd need a solicitor involved until you have the patent in place. Only you and the patent office aware until then.
Why do you want a catch or lock that will snap open with force? Surely that would be counter productive? What would be the point of one? Modern front door locks snap off if forced leaving the door still locked. They replaced the old ones which did as you say snap open when forced.
Well I'm sure you'll have no trouble at all finding a great engineer that's willing to work for nothing but a promise of "a percentage" when an idea that you haven't said anything about "makes millions". What an offer. They'll surely be knocking your door down, you should invest in a security guard before it's too late. Maybe the security guard will also work for free if you offer him "a percentage".
A couple of tips if approaching the club. 1. Get your ideas into some kind of structured proposal that people can understand. No one will take you seriously if you just ramble on. (No offense). 2. Don’t refer to anyone as “the lass from USA”. That’s really not the way to win hearts and minds. Learn her name, learn all about her, especially if you’re asking her to invest in your idea. Good luck with it though.
